Alexander and Mrs. Mar gery Pearson, both of Medford. To Salem City School Super intendent E. H. Hedrick left last night on a business trip to Salem. He expect to return to Medford by train early tomorrow morn ing. Fines Levied Harry Lewis and Alvin Ray Spencer were as sessed $10.00 each in city court yesterday on charges of drunken ness. James S. Stclle was sen tenced to five days in jail on the same charge. a Traffic Violations Joseph A. Wetterer was fined $5.00 in city court yesterday for failure to top at a stop street. Arthur David Hamaker was assessed $23.00 on a reckless driving charge and Harold Fawcett was fined $10.00 for failure to yield right of way. Minor Collision The autos of Vern Buscman, Route 2; R. O. King, Ashland, and E. C. Drake. Ashland, were involved in a three-car sideswiping mishap on the Pacific highway one mile south of Phoenix early this morning. according to a report on file. The machines of Thomas J. barker, Ashland and W. T. Cagle, 920 West Fifth street. collided on South Central ave nue yesterday afternoon, a re port on file said. Returns Here Ruby E. Rusque of 107 Sherman street returned here Tuesday evening after a four-day business trip to San Francisco. Her daughter, Miss Phyliss Rusque plans to arrive here Friday from Port land to reside with her mother. Recruiter Coming Staff Ser geant Walter L. Clemons of the Klamath Falls office of the United States marine corps will be at the post office in Medford from 9 a. m. to 3 p. m. Satur day on recruiting duty. Former service men and former marines between the ages of 31 and SO are wanted for navy yard guard duty and also regular enlist ments of men 17 to 30 years of age for duration service. Stearns, leaders, accompanied Thais Gorden, Pol ly Koffard, Barbara Olsen, Char lotte Wing, Helen Ferris, Car men Wright, Norma Stearns, Loree Monteith, Elaine Hoff man, Aleene Walsh and Barbara Meadows. a a a Receives Plaque Station Manager Max Henne of the local office of United Air Lines at the Medford municipal air port was in receipt today of a plaque presented to United Air Lines by the National Safety council in Chicago. The council is a national organization devot ed to securing increased safety to human life. United Air Lines received the aviation safety award for contributing to safe air transportation, having oper ated 312.207,740 passenger miles without passenger or crew fatality. The plaque, which is an exact facsimile of the National Council's award in Chicago for Group A airlines, will be kept at the Medford Air Lines office as recognition for Medford's part in winning the 1941 safety award. Plane Passengers P. Wood arrived from Portland by United Mainliner this morning and Mrs. George Murphy departed for Los Angeles. F. Little arrived early this morning from San Fran cisco. IN TYPING TESTS Phnenlx Central Point and Jacksonville high schools won honors in the county-wide typ ing contests, team scores of which were compiled this week after recent tests. Averages were based on the rwnrria nf SO nercent of the enrollment in typing classes of each of the "B" schools. Phoenix won both titles in the amateur (second year typ ing) events. Its three contestants averaged only .33 errors in ac curacy tests and 62 words per minute in speed ratings. Central Point took novice (first year typing! honors with an average of 2.18 errors among jo en trants. Jacksonville's 1 '. contest ant, avpraaed 37.81 words per minute to take the novice speed title. Traffic Lights to Regain Brilliance Visibility of Medford's stop lights is being augmented to day by the removal of black-out paint from the lenses, Frank Rogers, city electrical Inspector said this morning. The paint, which permitted only narrow cross threads of light to emerge was put on to comply with black-out regula tions. The lights will be hooked up to a central switch at the police station which already controls window lights of the business district. This arrange ment provides the means for extinguishing lights within the 60 second limit set by army authorities. Army Flier Killed in Plane Collision Baton Rouge, La., April 23 ir) An army flier was killed and another parachuted to safe ty in a plane collision eight miles west of Harding field yes terday. Second Lieutenant Ferdinand B. Paris, Jr., Houston, Texas, died as his plane struck the ground and exploded. Second Lt. Wesley S. Mink of Boise, Idaho, landed safely by para chute. W. LJOWNSEND William Listen Townsend passed away early Thursday morning at his home on South Central avenue. He had been a resident of Medford and Oregon for the past 40 years. He was born January 28, 1861, in Mis souri. Mr. Townsend is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna Townsend and five nieces, Mrs. C. H. Hay den, Mrs. Walter Morgan and Mrs. Mattie Miller, of Martinez. Calif., Mrs. Lee Gray, Walnut Creek, Calif., and Mrs. Ben Morris, San Francisco, .Calif. , also four step-children. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. nt Perl Funeral Home, with Rev. Louis Kerby of the Methodist church officiat ing. Interment will be in Ash land cemetery. maryTosborn taken by death Mary Jackson Osborn, resi dent of Medford for many years passed away at her home, 410 Hamilton street, Wednesday evening at 6 o'clock, after a brief illness. Mrs. Osborn was born at Jacksonville, Illinois, Feb. 12, 1871. She was an ardent worker in the Salvation Army for years She is survived by one nephew, Ray Michael, of Cen tral Point. Funeral services will be con ducted from Perl funeral home Saturday at 2 p. m. . Captain Charles Cox of the Salvation Army officiating. Interment will take place in Medford I.O. OF cemetery. CENTRAL PL HIGH Central Point high school won first place in driving com petition staged in the southern Oregon district recently, accord ing to information the school has received from Secretary ot State Earl Snell. Fourteen students who com peted for Central Point aver aged approximately 93 percent in the tests conducted. The award automatically enters the school in the state contest, the winner of which will be pre sented a trophy in June. A hand drawn district trophy will be given Central Point about the first of May.
