The picture introduces an at tractive newcomer to the series In Donna Reed. The story centers around Andy's efforts to show Miss Reed, as Melodie Nesbit, a good time, on request of his father. Judge Hardy has taken pity on the girl, after trying the case of her ' separated parents in his court. Realizing that she has led a hopelessly sheltered life, with no opportunity for fun, the Judge calls on Andy for help. When Andy takes her to her first dance, she proves to be the "wallflower" he had anticipated, but he bears up boldly under it. Experiencing a severe crush on him and realizing her own shortcomings, she learns how to make herself attractive before asking Andy to the next dance, and then becomes the sensation of the evening. Skilled blending of melo drama and riotous comedy has been used in this story of a group Frank Morgan in the title role as Captain Bob Yancey. The picture tells the amazing real-life -story of Yancey, for many years the state's attorney for the city of Lynchburg, and his remarkable family. The love of life and home and lofty ideals fixed by him are said to light the picture as they did the best-selling book by his daugh ter. Rebecca Yancey Williams. Morgan plays Cap'n Bob to the life, blustering and lovable at the same time. Spring Bying ton is completely endearing as his absent-minded but Jealous wife, and Kathryn Grayson scores an outstanding success as Rebecca Yancey, the daughter who wants to be a musician but who is forced to study painting because of family tradition. Other excellent portrayals are offered by Natalie Thompson as the daughter who wants to be come a woman lawyer, Douglass Newland and Mark Daniels as the respective swains of the two srown-uD daughters, and by Juanita Quigley, Scotty Beckett and Dickie Jones as the young- i sters in the family. (Pi Applications for permission to hold large public gatherings in Oregon and Washington should be addressed to the governor of the state concerned, military of ficials explained today in clari fying the army's policy on fairs, festivals, parades, conventions and other large meetings. Applications should be accom panied by plans outlining pro posed methods for control of traffic to avoid congestion. For gatherings less than 9.000 east of the Cascade, plans need ac company only those applications for assemblies which are located on jrterial highways. It was further explained that authority for assembly cannot be granted more than three months in advance. This is what I think." But this was not what made Johnson interesting and import ant to me. I thou glit he was a great technician. He was a swell writer the best in the business. He had the Imaginative turn of mind which grasped words and lined them up into phrases with barbs on them. He got into you. And when you look Into him that way, you will find a great spirit, out of which he always spoke. It was the spirit of a soldier, a tough-talking guy who told it with the pointedness of a top sergeant. Because this style made so many enemies and Inspired pas sive resistance, I don't think the literal greatness that was in him was ever appreciated. He was a poor administrator, a n impractical executive, s blundering politico, a belliger ent and gallant spirit and a truly great writer. I don't care what he stood for. He stood , there, openly, challcngingly. I tip my hand against my forehead to the general who said what he had to say better than anyone else I know. Let those writers who have neglect ed to mourn his passing say their pieces half as well. PLAY THIS WEEK i High school students of St i Mary's Academy will give their ' annual play In the school audi-! torium on Thursday and Friday evenings at 8:15 o'clock. The performance will Include three lively one-art comedies entitled: "Too Much Bobbie." "The First Shave." "The Lost Elevator." Re hearsals have been in progress for several weeks and the work being accomplished by the cast gives promise of a very interest ing and highly entertaining pro gram. An enthusiastic ticket selling campaign was launched last week by Neil Iven, president of the Booster Club. Those carrying roles In the various plays are mostly mem bers of the Senior class, assisted by students from the other classes of the high school. SURVEYING CLASS Night classes In surveying are open for young men at the senior high school tomorrow according to Principal Leonard Mayfleld. Classes will be taught by Cap tain Lin Shields, U. S. engineer, and training will be both theore tical and practical. Enrollment free, sessions will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p. m. Purpose Is to prepare young men for surveying and other en gineering Jobs. Movie Star's Mate Visits M'Leod Farm Arriving In Medford yesterday noon by United Mainllner was Mrs. George Murphy ot Holly wood, Cal. This is her first visit to Medford since October and she Journeyed north to look Into Improvements being made on the Murphy property at McLeod on the Crater Lake highway. Mrs. Murphy plans to return south In several days, depending on the condition of her son, Dennis Mi chael, age three and a halt, who I ill in California. Her actor husband, George Murphy was unable to accom pany her to Medford as he is being filmed In a motion picture at present with Judy Garland. She mo tored to the Murphy ranch for a short Inspection trip yester day afternoon. Civilian Defense Activities There will be a Joint meeting Monday at 7:30 p. m. In the armory of the Lions and Active clubs with the War Stamp and Bond committee, W. A. Gates. Glenn Jackson and Major Carl Tengwald. This Is a brief but important meeting and all mem bers are urged to attend. Members may call the Cham ber of Commerce if they desire any further Information. Lectures Draw Crowd An interested crowd attended the lectures on Civil Defense Thursday and Fridav even In cm at Jackson school gym. G. W. KelllnEton and Guv Davis were main speakers. Ed Mann gave a snort talk on combating poison gases and Incendiary bombs. John Gribble spoke on the air raid warden set-up and great need of the awakening and full cooperation or ine public. Vital points were explained regarding protection of lives and homes in case of raids. At the final meeting Monday evening a reel of very fine first aid motion pictures will be shown, and arrangements made to start anothnr first aid class.
