Oliver will be at Annapolis for one month and it was thought here that he might be named head football coach at the navy physical training center for aviation cadets at St. Mary s col lege, California. Coach Oliver, who served In the army during the World war No. 1 and later attended West Point, said from his hospital bed here this evening, "serving the armed forces at the present time is so Important that I feel honored to have been selected to serve, although I will leave the University of Oregon and Eugene with regrets ... The Redskins are tied with Grants Pass with three wins and one loss. O'Brien crossed the plate for three of the victors' tallies and Jandreau scored twice for the Grizzlies. Provost and Jandreau each slugged a three-bagger for Ashland. Both teams collected eight hits. Jacksonville and Grants Pass will probably contend in a pair o' make-up tilts this week. April 11 (AP) The University of Washington second frosh boat won a mile and a half race over choppy Lake Washington today in 8 minutes. 21 seconds. The frosh finished three lengths ahead of the U. S. First lightweight boat, with Oregon Bute trailing another two and one half lengths back. The boats had to fight rough water whipped up by a strong west wind over the entire course The race was the official open ing of the competitive crew sea son here. A highlight of the Angel bat ting spree was a homer with two on bate by First Baseman Eddie Waitkus. Johnny Hill's single with the bases loaded drove In the Padres two Inning runs. Manager Dutch Lleber will send two righthanded pitchers Steve Crippen and himself against the CCC headquarters baseball nine today at 2 o'clock sharp as the Craters open their 1942 practice season at the fair grounds park. There will be no admission charged and the pub lic is invited to attend. Slated to hurl part, and per haps most, of the game for the CCC club Is Walter Snyder, a southpaw who has been working out with the Craters and who has taken Lieber's eye. "He's a good' lefthander and I want to see what the Craters will do against him," Lieber said in ex plaining why Snyder, not a mem ber of the CCC, would pitch for that club. Lleber said the Craters would open with Hal Adanu catching, Crippen pitching, Al Fleishman on first, Don Fawcett on second, Norm Worthley on short, Alex McDonald on third, Dwight Cath erwood in left, Harold Fawcett in center and Harold Lang in right. Lieber plans to pitch the last four innings for the Craters. Today's game will be the first official practice test for the Cra ters prior to the opening of the Oregon-California league May 16. BEN HOGAN CUTS LEAD OF NELSON Augusta, Ga., April 11. (Pi That tireless machine of golf William Ben Hogan of Her-shey,- Pa. all but broke up the Augusta Masters' tournament to day and set Its galleries buzzing like a barn-full of aggravated bees. Tall Byron Nelson still was leading at the three-quarters mark with 207 to Hogan's 210 but bettors who held wagers on the Toledo stylist were far more worried about his chances than they were yesterday when he led Sam Byrd, the one-time base baller, by only a single stroke. While Nelson shot a methodi cal 35-3772 today and Byrd took 36-39 75, the Hcrshey Prairie Fire slicked five strokes off Nelson's advantage with a flat 34 on the front nine and a paralyzing 33 on the home stretch for 67 best round of the day.
