DRAFT RESHUFFLE TO PUT MORE IN 1-A CALL CLASS Must Have Actual Depend ents For Deferment Out side Income to Be Factor Salem, April 9 W) Oregon's 67 local selective service boards hive begun wholesale reclassi fication of men who have been placid in class III-A. with the result that a large number of III-A men, previously deferred because they have dependents, wilt be placed in class I-A, mak ing them subject to Immediate military service. Colonel Elmer V. Woo ton, state selective serv ice director, said today. Marriage, in Itself, no longer will be cause for deferment. A man, to be deferred, must actu ally have persons dependent upon him for their support. Outside Help Is Key If a man has a wife and no children, and if the wife is ap able of earning her own living, into the army he must go. Or, if a man has a family, he might be placed In clan I-A if there Is enough outside income to sup port the family while he's away. The lelective service boards will re-examine all question naires of III-A men, and if the boards have any reason to be lieve any men should be placed in class I-A under the new Inter pretations, these men will get supplementary questionnaires. Men receiving these new questionnaires will, in order to obtain continued deferment, have to prove they have actual dependents. . Among those who will be transferred from III-A to I-A include men who have been di vorced since their original ques tionnaires were filled out;- men who have become married since the draft law was passed, and those whose dependents have died or have ceased to be depen dent. To Get Tougher The men who have depen dents won't have to go to war until congress makes provision for support of their families. The selective service organi zation also is going to get tough er with men deferred because they have Jobs in defense indus tries. Heads of those Industries already have been warned that they will have to give up their younger men to the army, re placing them with men not sub ject to military service. The new Invention Is a far cry from the original "divining rod" which the early prospector car ried in his hands, parallel to the earth's surface, and which "twitched," pointed up and down or otherwise "acted up" when it passed over mineral deposits or water sources. The successful use of Hoover's Invention involves such compli cate mechanisms as that of pro ducing an earthquake beneath the earth's surface by dynamite discharges. This artificial earthquake pro duces the same seismic wave as that which follows a real earth quake and it is from the reflec tion of this wave that the pres ence of mineral deposits can be detected. Also Locates Oil The wave first travels down wards and is then reflected back to the earth's surface from hard er or softer layers of different depths. Receptors placed at different points along the ground pick up the waves and record them on a moving strip of photographic paper. From the different times of ar rival of the different "reflec tions" the depths of the various reflecting beds can be calcu lated. The invention consists of an electrical network which Hoover calls a "dispersion compensator." This shows that the seismic waves 4: avel at different veloci ties through simple earth. The newly patented invention is equally successful in determin ing the presence of oil.
