San Francisco, April 3. UP) Under the tightening pressure of war for the second time in Its 39-year history, the Pacific Coast league was off to a rous ing start today in the 1942 baseball campaign. Opening games In four Cali fornia cities drew enthusiastic crowds and had all the tradi tional zip and color. The pep pery coast league is annually the first in the country to get under way and the last to dose. A military aspect marked the Inaugurals yesterday and last night. At San Francisco, Rear Admiral John W. Greenslade, commandant of the 12th naval district, tossed out the first ball. Rear Admiral Ralston Holmes. Uth naval district chief, did the honors at San Diego. Attendance Good The openers were well at tended, Sacramento drawing the largest crowd, 7,000. The home town Solons dropped a 7-2 de cision to Seattle, champion the past three years and tabbed to repeat. Dick Barrett pitched three-hit ball while his mates collected 14 hits oft three Sac ramento hurlers. At Hollywood, a night crowd of 6,500 saw their stars nip Oakland, 3-2. Governor Culbert Olson tossed the first ball. San Francisco crushed the re organized Los Angeles Angels. 10-6, at the Seal's stadium in a free-hitting affair before 6,300. and at San Diego the Portland Beavers, picked to wind up in their usual spot, the cellar. again this season, gut off to a flying start with a 4-2 win over San Diego, before 9,000 fans. Despite the uncertain future of baseball in this prescribed war zone, the outlook was con siderably brighter than In 1918 when the league was forced to disband under a "work or fight" edict of the first world war. If it were not for the red head's absolute determination to have a winner and his will ingness to spend big mcney to get it, the temptation would be strong to pick one of the three top clubs out of a hat. They ap pear to be that evenly matched right now. But It is a pretty good baseball axiom to string along with the spender. It should be a beauty of a race right down to the wire. The Dodgers and Cards waged a thriller last year, but this one might be even better because the Cincinnati club has recov ered from its "world champions ' daze and is going to be in there punching. It appears safe to dismiss the other five outfits from the real contention, though Pittsburgh might, as usual, set a hot early pace. The Dodgers are a little sounder club all around than either the Reds or the Cards, and there is no guarantee that they will not increase their strength during the race. If their pitching shows signs of falling off, for instance, Mac Phail will go after Buck New som hard enough to get him. He might get Buck anyway. That might prove discouraging to the Reds and the Cards, for their chances of adding any strength from here on are prac tically nil. Already Brooklyn has one of baseball's outstanding infield quartets in Dolf Camilii, Billy Herman, Peewee Reese and Arky Vaughan, and it has the league's best young outfielder In Harold Reiser. It has a brace of top pitchers in Kirby Higbe and Whit Wyatt, and two good catchers in Billy Sullivan and Mickey Owen. There is no out standing weakness. Durst, Longview YMCA, 160 pound class, who decisioned Ed Fulkerson of the Portland air base, were chosen for the na tional AAU championships at Boston. Lack of funds, officials said, prevented sending the usual del egation of four. However, two alternates were named: Dan Kelley, dusky Port land air base slugger who won the 173 pound title from Lynn Ewing, Multnomah club, on a foul, and 13-year-old Melvln Sitser, Portland Catholic Youth Organization, 118 pounds, who decisioned Harold Eastman, Port land Central Community club.
