(AP A 23-year-old soldier declared to day. Detective Captain James E. Childers said, that he watched a 48-year-old woman shoot and kill herself in a suicide pact, then lost his nerve and fled from a hotel room without taking his own life. Thomas E. Crane, Lowry field soldier from Bartlesville, Okla., and father of a five-year-old son. toia his story 01 uie aeam 01 Mrs. Nora Granberg, dry clean ing branch manager, after hours of questioning, Childers said. Crane was arrested yesterday. Childers said Crane had been drinking heavily. The soldier explained, Chil ders reported, that he and Mrs. Granberg "had agreed to kill ourselves together several days ago. "We were both just fed up with the way things were going and I was in a jam for being ab sent from the field." Crane was held without charge. RAID LOSS BILL Washington, March 28 (P) A bill which will replace the present free-protection-for-every- one method of insurance against air raid property losses with pol icies based on average risk rates was signed into law today by President Roosevelt. The measure establishes the war damage corporation in the reconstruction finance corpora tion and provides that it make available, through insurance or reinsurance, "reasonable protec tion against loss or damage to real or personal property result ing from enemy attack, includ ing damage caused by United States forces resisting such at tack. Rates must be fixed by July 1 by the secretary of commerce and the protection must be made available upon the payment of premiums. ni iDiMrpmri: I I LI I I1 1 U UIIIU United States Army Head quarters, Australia, March 28 UP) Drab khaki clothing re placed fancy uniforms and gold cloth when President Manuel Quezon of the Philippines was sworn In for his second term last December 30 In "the rudest type of bomb shelter," officials disclosed today while Quezon journeyed toward this headquarters. Quezon is in Australia but how he reached this island con tinent and the method of travel through the Japanese battle zone a trip rivalling General Douglas MacArthur's in haz ards, must not be revealed for the time being. U. S. AERIAL POWER ON VIEW APRIL G Washington, March 28. VP) American air power will go on view on Army day, April 6, at army air stations and a dozen major cities. The war department announc ed today that Lieutenant Gen eral Henry H. Arnold, air force commander, had ordered full participation in the army day observance. Except at certain strategic points on the west coast, all army air stations will hold open house, with late model fighter planes and bombers on exhibi tion. Special exhibitions of late model military planes have beer arranged for scattered cities. PRO-AXIS INDIAN DIES A!R CRASH New York, March 28, The Vichy radio said tonight that Subhas Chandra Bose, pro axis Indian nationalist, had been killed in an airplane crash off the Japanese coast, CBS reported. The Tokyo radio said yester day that a plane bearing 11 pe sons, including four Indians en- route to an "Indian independ ence" conference 1 Tokyo, was missing and that all aboard were believed dead but it made no mention of Bose. A subsequent Berlin broad cast identified the Indians in this party as residents of Ma laya and Thailand. Bose, former mayor of Cal cutta who fled to axis territory some time ago, broadcast an aj peal from Berlin on March 14 to Indians to revolt. with her son. Ben Hur Lamp man, well-known Oregonian edi torial and feature writer. Mrs. Lampman has lived in Central Point for the last 25 years and previously lived on Trail creek. Dies in South Word was re ceived last week of the death of Mrs. Dot Pickard McNasser, on March 18, in Los Angeles. Mrs. McNasser lived in the Willow Springs district 20 years ago and a nephew, Walter G. Bradbury of Central Point, Is among sur vivors. She had engaged in so cial service work in California after leaving this region. Injured Albert L. Durham, guard at Camp White, was slightly injured early yesterday morning when his machine was struck by a locomotive at a can tonment crossing, according to George Davis, Perl ambulance driver who was called to the scene. Durham, from Ashland, sustained a bruised chest and minor cuts. He was released from the Community hospital about noon yesterday. CHINA GIRDS TO CALL MAN POWER Chungking, March 28 (P) The Chinese executive Yuan an nounced a national general mo bilization act today giving the government almost unlimited power to conscript the country's manpower and material re sources for an all-effort against the Japanese. The announcement said the new act was the result of pro posals made by Chiang Kai Shek, "who foresaw the present Pacific war and its effects on China's situation and had plan ned and prepared to meet them in anticipation of conditions now existing." FUGITIVE HELD Portland, March 28. (AP) Edward G. Ray, held In Tacoma for Portland authorities, was wanted here in connection with the fatal stabbing of John Ott, 59, Portland, June 18, 1940, De tective Capt. J. J. Keegan said today. That Walker can bat the Reds to the title Is, or course, a ques tion that only time will answer, but make no mistake, he will tighten up the National league race. Dreg ger was fined $5 in the city court Saturday morning for failure to stop at a stop street. Robert L. Dickerson, Central Point, re ceived a $10 fine or five days in Jail Friday, for violation of the basic rule. Dickerson was traveling 50 miles per hour on North Riverside avenue, police said. Mrs. O. J. Halboth was fined $2.50 for double parking. The $10 fine or five day Jail sen tence received by Ray Vincent Cunningham was suspended when he left town yesterday.
