MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 1942. PAGE FIVE AIR RAID MANUAL TO BE GIVEN OUT Every Home to Receive Free Copy Telling What To Do - If Enemy Planes Come. Every home in this area will receive a free copy of the state of Oregon's new citizens' manual, "Official Air Raid In structions" within a few days, announces Governor Charles A. Sprague, state director of civil ian defense. The 24-page book contains 70 illustrations, encompassing all the vital information necessary to the average citizen in cse of enemy air raid. It will be distributed by neighborhood air raid wardens. Residents are urged to look for the manual and to hang it with the tele phone book or place it in the blackout room. "The task of defense is so tremendous that the individual citizen's self-reliance is neces sarily his greatest protection in time of attack," said Governor Sprague. "We have prepared this book to sum up the infor mation that the householder should possess in order to oest protect his life and property." Material in this manual Is based on lessons learned by the Britisn people from the disas trous $8,000,000,000 London fire that burned out the city center of London during the Decem ber 29, 1940 air blitz. The in structions for the Oregon man ual were checked for accurary by army, state and local defense authorities. The manual, with 70 illustra tions, gives detailed information and instructions on the follow ing subjects: 1. Kinds of air raid signals in Oregon, what to do, where er you are, when the air raid signal sounds. 2. What you can do now to prepare for an air raid essen tial supplies you should obtain now. 3. Escape or rescue methods in case youi home or building is hit. 4. First aid elementary infor mation all members of your family should know for artificial respiration and for controlling arterial bleeding. 5. Types of bombs, how to identify them, how to control them. 6. Gas attacks, how they may occur, what you can do. The Oregon State Defense council estimated that in the possible case of 50 Jap bombers raiding a metropolitan area from a naval carrier operating off the coast they could drop 50 000 in cendiary bombs. Approximately 5,000 fires would result from these bombs. Emphasizing the need for Ore gonians to learn how to combat incendiary bombs, particularly. AIR LOOKOUTS FOR Washington, March 28 (JP) The maritime commission awarded contracts today for the construction of 56 large tankers, 18 emergency cargo vessels of the Liberty ship design, and a new six-way shipyard at Bruns wick, Ga. The tankers will be construct ed in a new shipyard being built by the Kaiser company at Swan Island, near Portland, Ore. The tanker contract replaces one previously awarded the Kaiser company for the con. struction of 70 Liberty ships at the Swan Island yard. The commission explained that it was diverting some of the nation's shipyard capacity to tanker construction, presum ably to meet a need for tankers made acute by recent sinkings. Anti-Tank Guns To Meet Threat Of Nazis' Mechan ized Units Says Observer By Eddy Gil more Moscow, Mirch 26 P) The storied Cossacks still stick to their horses 'out they've added anti-tank guns to their tradi tional armament to meet the challenge of mechanized war fare. I watched a regiment of Cos sacks as It prepared for the spring fighting against the Ger mans. Formed In the Urals last September, it was made up of Kuban and Orenburg Cossacks with a sprinkling of Dons. s These soldiers were the tough est, most hardened I've seen in Russia. They are heavily equipped. Besides the vicious sabres, each Cossack carried an automatic rifle and a pistol. The regiment also Is otherwise well-equipped even to modern radio communications. Thunder Over Snow While I watched, the strange strains if Kuban Cossack music came across the snow Major Kusjma Keresky pointed to the long line of black-cloaked horse men and cried: "The charge!" Suddenly the day was filled with a wild shout. The horses, tough Siberians, thundered up through the snow. The Cossacks, riding with the grace peculiarly their own pounded down upon an acre of twigs on posts. Whirling their rabres above their heads, the Cossacks began slashing. Twig after twig flew into the air. It Is quite a feat of marks manship to spiit a twig with a broad sabre while riding at 30 miles an hour. "So It will be soon with the Germans." grinned Col. Pyotr Karpachev, an Orenburg Cos sack. "These men leave for the front soon." "Esteemed Grandparents" Found For Many Chinese Children Here Ready response is being found in the city for "esteemed grandparents" by C. E. "Pop" Gates who is heading the Med ford campaign for United China Relief drive and Mr. Gates said he is proud to announce that Mtdtord already has several "esteemed grandparents". Mr." Gates received authority) from Portland headquarters of United China Relief today to give certificates for "esteemed grandparents" to those who con tribute $5, $m $15 or $20, the money taking care of a Chinese child for a consecutive, three, six, nine or 12 month period. The money hospitalizes, feeds, clothes and educates a Chinese child for the selected period, of time. Heretofore the certificate has been issued only for the 12 month period. Mr. Gates has a picture of a tiny Chinese lad eating a bowl of rice and sug gests that contributors hang the picture in their dining room. Each morning as they enjoy their hearty American breakfast the "esteemed grandparents" can realize that they are sup porting some worthy young Chinese. ' The organization of "esteem ed grandparents" is sponsored by Madame Chiang Kai-shek. The drive continues in Jack son county the rest of the week and anyone may leave their contribution at either bank or chamber of commerce. A receipt will be given and if the dona tion it large enough an "esteemed grandparent" certifi cate will be received.
