Drager of 521 Dakota street have received word from their son, Jack, of his promo tion March 8 to second class sea man on a destroyer based at Pearl Harbor. Jack, a Medford high school graduate, wrote that he was in port about once every week or two. Drunks Punished Charged with drunkenness in a public place, Herman Croft was given a five day jail sentence. For a similar offense Ray Mounts re ceived a five-day suspended sen tence or a $10 fine. A Negro, Lemmuel Howell, was given a suspended five day jail term I for begging. The cases were in city court. Superintendent Returns City School Superintendent E. H. Hcdrick returned to Medford this morning from Salem where city superintendents throughout the state convened yesterday to confer on plans for gearing the schools in the defense effort. Problems included sugar ration ing and conducting of first aid and defense schools. Hedrick left for Salem Sunday. PERSONAL Violators Fined Three mot orists were hailed into city court yesterday charged with traffic violations. John Perkins was fined $5 for failure to stop at a stop street. August W. Denny and D. R. Alexander, waived pre liminary hearing in justice court yesterday, to a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses, and was ordered held to await grand jury action un der $1,000 bond. Alexander, the district attorney said, was due to be arraigned before Circuit Judge H. K. Hanna soon. The complaint alleges Alex ander passed a spurious $20 check on the Mark Jarmin drug store. District Attorney George W. Neilson said Alexander had cashed 15 or 20 checks in this city and vicinity. He has been employed as an Inspector on the cantonment work. ; FOR GRANGE TALK Governor Charles A. Sprague will deliver the address at the annual meeting of the Ashland Chamber of Commerce Thursday evening at the Talent Grange hall. The governor will arrive in Medford Thursday morning and confer with officials of the Jackson county civilian de fense council before leaving for Talent. A small group of Medford business and professional men interested in the current civilian defense program will meet with Governor Sprafcue at an in formal luncheon at the Hotel Jackson in this city. Following the suggestions made by H. C. Kaltenborn to a nation-wide audience Sunday, the Medford Kiwanis club at its Monday noon luncheon meet ing drafted a telegram for each of Oregon's five legislators in Washington, D. C, asking that they sponsor immediate legisla- lation designed to place the country on an all-out war foot ing. The telegrams were dispatch ed to Washington yesterday af ternoon, and the Kiwanis club plans to seek the cooperation of other local service clubs and or ganizations in flooding the na tional capital with similar mes sages. Sent to Senators Charles L. McNary and Rufus C. Holman, and Representatives James W. Mott, Walter M. Pierce and Ho mer D. Angell, the telegrams read as follows: "As our representative In con gress, we ask that you sponsor immediate legislation for dura tion of the war. "First, to control prices of all commodities, including farm products, in order to eliminate further inflation. "Second, to control compen sation of all classes of workers, suspend payments for all over time and permit unlimited hours of work. "Third, to make strikes in all industries unlawful. "Fourth, to limit all industry to fair return on investment. "Fifth, to eliminate all non- war essential governmental ac tivities, bureaus and agencies. "Sixth, to disregard all pres sure groups and sponsor only legislation designed to win the war. "We are not apathetic to the seriousness of the war. This is the wish of 100 per cent of the members of the Medford Ki wanis club." Support of the Rotary club in the campaign was enlisted at its noon luncheon-meeting to day. Rotarian Leonard B. May field read a copy of the tele gram, and after meeting with instant approval the matter was referred to a meeting of the di rectors tonight. Otto J. Frohnmayer, spokes man for the Kiwanis club, ex plained that the plan tied in with legislation introduced in the house yesterday limiting profits of war contracts to a maximum of six per cent, and suspending federal statutes pre scribing maximum hours of work. The Kiwanis club, he said, is calling on all clubs, organiza tions and individuals in favor of such legislation as asked in the telegrams, to write or wire their congressmen immediately. HOLDUPS FOILED BY NONCHALANCE OF STORE OWNER Two young men, attempting a hold-up at the Beverage Shop. 124 South Central, last night, were apparently foiled by the I nonchalance of the proprietor. Horace Turpin. According to Turpin's report, the two men came up to the counter as he started toward the back of his shop. One of them, dark complexioned, with revolver, said, "hold-up," as Turpin returned, "let's have It." Turpin went on about his work, saying, "Help yourself." The men then turned and left without bothering anything. The gun wielder vyas de scribed by Turpin as not over 21, dark and smooth shaven. He appeared to be about five feet, six inches tall and to weigh about 140 pounds. He had a southern drawl and was de scribed as good looking.
