And whv did Gran let you leave " -Gran la dead. Randy," aald Melissa, and a lump swelled in her throat to that no more words could let past 1L "You poor youngster," aald Randy and hit voice was warm and tender "I'm terribly sorty." And then, "So you cam to town lor a visit "Not for a visit Randy." the Interrupted. "I'm going to live nere. i nave u nna a too "Oh. that'a not to good the city will swallow you in one bite. Melissa," protested Randy "Look. I've got to see you, but I'm all tied up right now in a conference. It's likely to be hour before I'm free. But bow about having din ner with mer About seven? Wher are you staying:? She mentioned her hotel and heard him whistle. And then he promised to pick her up there at aeven and the went back to wher Irene was waitina for her. There were stars in her eyet and wings on her heels, so Irene knew before ah reached the table that ah had talked la Randy.' Irene grimly ground out the tip of her half-smoked cigarette in tn tray oesiae ner ana saia. "Like that, eh? So we're aoini to meet him, art we? Well, that'a Just dandyl Just perfectly dandy!" And youTI tee you were wrong," said Melissa sturdily. "He's nice, Irene, You'U like hm!" "Sure I will and howl" said Irene grimly, and gathered up her purse and gloves. "Let's get going. There are things to do be fore aeven P.M. my gaL" Irene insisted that Melissa needed shampoo and "hair-do,' and deposited her at a ahop man aced by a friend of Irene's. "The works, Lucy, and I do mean works, taid Irene firmly. "She's to audition tonight for a very special party. So see the looks her most elegant" "Leave it to us. Irene," taid Lucy, amili'jg at Melissa and leading her to narrow white walled booth where a girl with deft hands trek possession of her. That night, standing in her room before the mirror. Melissa wasnt at all sure that sh liked what the taw. Of course, the hastily assured herself, feeling guilty at such a thought. Irene and Lucy knew about things like atyle and fashion and what was smart and all that So the rather extreme, but very smart upswept coiffure into which the warm, ruddy masses of her curia had been awept must be the best pos sible style for her. After all. the eoindn't go around a big city like New Orleant with her hair in a shoulder-length mate of curls framing her face, as she had worn It back at the Point: and the yel low chiffon drest that tlid smoothly down her body, break ing into toft twirlt above her in steps, couldn't really be, as Me lissa knew Gran would have thought it "indecent" "Ac" Hendricks , THE telephone thrilled sharply and she started violently, still to unaccustomed to such a mod ern convenience that sh took it up a trifle reluctantly. "A Mist Graham calling," taid the clerk. "Please tell Mist Graham HI he right down," ah answered swiftly. With a final glanc Into the mirror, she took up the cobwebby thirred chiffon wrap that lust matched the yellow frock and which was even more covering than the summer night required, and hurried down to the lobby. Irene, looking smart and so phisticated in an ice-blue frock beneath a atunnlng Spanish shawl of soft ivory crepe embroidered with huge, impossible flowers, was lounging comfortably in a deep chair not far from the ele vator, and she motioned to Me lissa, studying her intently as Melissa came across the lebby "Take off that silly cape she ordered without a word of pre liminary greeting. "You look tunning. I'll bet you'll open Hendricks' eyea plenty." "You look lovely, too,' taid Me lissa happily. "Here, ait down," taid Irene, shifting a little to permit Melissa to sink down beside her. "We can watch the door here and you can tee the boy-friend when he comes in" To Melissa the crowded lobby teemed gay and exciting and very attractive Sh studied the men and decided not one of them was half so good-looking as she remembered Randy. "Don't look now," said Irene suddenly her voice harsh and a little uneven, aa she bent forward to crush out her cigarette in the tray beside her on the little end table "But I see Ace Hendricks there near the door, talking to the two leading eitirens " Melissa caught her breath and her heart climbed up into her throat and her hands shook a lit tle There was a terrible moment of suspense before ihe turned her head and her eyet found him and It wat Randy. Somehow from the first, despite her efforts to deny it sh had felt aur thai the man Irene knew aa "Ace" Hendricks wat the man sh had known as Randy: but Irene mutt be mistaken about him. He couldn't possibly be the way Irene had dsjeribed film He waa better-looking than sh remembered him. He looked little older mor than just year. He was tall and lean and brown; hia evening clothes fitted him with a perfection that spoke of excellent tailoring and superl ative fabric He laughed a little aa he turned away from the two impressive-looking "leading citi zens" and went toward the desk And Melissa, without waiting for Irene'a word, waa on her feel and going swiftly towards him. Miss Melissa Marlowe, please. ih heard him say to the clerk at sh reached his side Casually he glanced at her. An impersonal spark of admiration leaped into hia eyes, but there was no sign of recognition as he looked politely away again Me lissa's silly heart tripped and fell flat on its face. Ie hadn't recog nized her I "Here I am. Randy, the taid. Randy turned, startled, and looked down at her. Hia eyes awept over her. narrowed, and he taid under hia breath, Uh. lor gosh sakes " And then aloud he said. "What the devil have you done to your self Melissa? You don't look like my girl of the woods a bit" Melissa said, above tn lump that formed in her throat wink ing very fast to fight back the tears. "D-d-d-don't you like it?" Sure he does. babv. said Irene's smooth, cynical voice be hind them, and Randy tjrned. startled, to face the cold, inimical look in her frosty blue eyea. "He's just crazy about it Hello, Ace. nows tn heel? Ruined Reunion RANDY looked from Melissa t Irene and then back to Me liisa and said sternly, "And wher does she come into the picture, Melissa?" "Just about here, I'd lay wouldn't you?' taid Irene with sort of murderous sweetness. "The infant stumbled into my shop to day in search of duds with which to slay the populace of our city while she loobrd for a ob and I took her in hand." Randy nodded grimly. "I mletit have known." He turned to Me- issa. trying to ignore Irene. See here. Melissa, why didn't you call me the moment you not in town?" "It must have been her guard ian angel that kept her from do ing just that don't vou think?" suggested Irene gently. "Or don't you believe in such old-fashioned protectors as guardian angels. Ace my lad?" Randy became ronsciout of the clerk, who was listening so hard that his ears were almost visibly extended. He put a hand beneath Melisa t elbow and turned her about to face the dining-room. we might as well eat he said grimly. 'There's no reason why we should take all of New Or leans into our confidence. I sup pose vou're dining with us?" be asked Irene. Smiling sweetly. sweetness tnd a smile that did not touch her eyes, Irene said firmly, "I Wouldn't miss it for the world. Thank you for asking me though I was all prepared to in vite myself if you made it necet- ssry." Inside th big dining-room. Randy refused the first two tables which the waiter-captain sug gested and took one in a far cor ner that was partically secluded behind tall palm. There wat 4 cushioned bench at the back, and Randy drew Melissa there to ait beside him while Irene, smiling little taut ugly smile, sat in a chair facing them. Melissa was on the verge 01 tears. She had dreamed so long about this moment; and it had been spoiled completely. there lav between Handy and Irene some dark, ugly thing that made them hate each other. And the hatred of the two spilled over and tarnished forever the beau tiful moment toward which all her days and nights of living had been shaping sine that morning on the Point when they'd said goodbye and Randy had asked her to call him if she ever came to town. Randy ordered, obviously an xious to be rid of the waiter And when the waiter had gone. Irene and Randy looked at each other across the table and Randy de manded harshly. "What have you been telling her about me? 'Only the truth, darling. Iran said, and her tone made the en dearment as savage aa a physical blow, mly that vou were a heel and a thug and that you ran a crooked gambling loint." Randy ran hit Angers tnrough her hair with a little weary ges ture and said, in a tone of angry exasperation. "Oh for Heaven 1 sake. Irene either change the record or gel a new needlel" "It's true, isn't it? You owneo the ga-nblina house didn't you?" demanded Irene, and though her voice was low-pitched it shook a little with the Intensity of her emotion.
