The court approved a proper ty aettlement under which Steinbeck agreed to pay his wife 1111.982.10 in cash and mora than $100,000 in various bond and shares. They were married January 11, 1830, in Los Angelea, and separated April 27, 1941. $92,680 TAXES The California Oregon Power company yesterday paid lte cur rant taxes in full, with a check for $92,080.07 to the tax col lection department of the sher iffs office. It was the largest county payment of the year. The Southern Pacific railroad paid it taxes the first of the week amounting to more than $81,000. Inasmuch as March 19 falls on Sunday payments will be re ceived by the tax collection de partment next Monday. The ex tra day of grace was directed by Sheriff Syd L Brown. Tax payments this year have been brisk with nothing close to a rush but a steady stream both in person and by mail. Abandon Steamer in Alaska Waters Seattle, March IS. OP) The ISth naval district headquarters announced today that all pas sengers and all but IS crewmen and the captain of the steam ship Mount McKlnley, aground In Alaska waters, had been re moved by a coast guard cutter. Tha statement said there were no casualties, that "li was hoped" the captain and remain ing crew members could be taken off the stricken vessel within tha next 12 hours, and that tha ship would have to be "temporarily abandoned, as she will need to be repaired by sal vage crews before she can be hauled afloat" STEEL MILL Washington, March 13 (IP) Henry J. Kaiser, west coast in dustrialist, has been authorized to construct and operate a steel plate mill in San Bernardino county, Calif., to turn out ship plates for the west coast ship building program, the war pro duction board said today. Many are expected to attend the school for instructors to be conducted in room S of the senior high school at 7:30 p. m. March 10 to 19 inclusive by Paul R. Washke, professor of physical education at the Uni versity of Oregon and senior in structor for the civilian defense training program in Oregon. Men and women attending the school will be qualified to conduct classes throughout the county to Instruct those en rolled in protective units. First Aid Work A first aid class will be or ganized in the Community hall at Applegate at 7:30 p. m. Mon day. Lee Port, Jr., will be the Instructor. THOS. HAGEN OF CENTRAL PT. DIES Thomas Hagen, a resident of Central Point for the past 38 years, passed away at a local hospital at 11:40 p. m., March 12, after a short illness. Mr. Hagen was born at Vine Grove, Kentucky, and was 87 years of age. He is survived by two broth ers, E. L. and R. P. Hagen, both living in Kentucky, also nieces and nephews. Remains will be transferred to Elizabeth Town, Ky., this evening at 8 o'clock. Perl Fun eral home in charge. Gus Arnheim Band Plays Here Monday Gus Arnheim and his famous "ace band from movleland" will play for the Saint Patrick's Day ball at Oriental Gardens, Mon day, March 10. Long a favorite, Mr. Arnheim has bad thousands of requests from his fans to visit cities everywhere but he was able to arrange only a limited tour be fore returning to Los Angeles. OREGON CONTENDERS OFF FOR CAGE MEET Portland, March 13 (ZD- Signal Oil company's runner-up basketball team in the Oregon AAU tourney left this morning for the national tournament at Denver. ' The championship Bradford team left yesterday. For a time it appeared that finances would hold Oregon representation to one team, but the AAU executive committee decided yesterday that both teams should make the trip. Washke Airliner Smashup Remains Mystery Washington, March 13 (IP) The civil aeronautics board re ported today that it had been unable to determine what caused an American Airlines transport plane to crash last October 30 near St. Thomas, Ontario, killing all 20 persons aboard. The board said the possibility of sabotage had been "consid ered and explored, but thus far no evidence pointing - with any degree of probability to sabot age has been discovered."
