New York .March IS (JP) Federal Judge Henry W. God dard today sentenced seven per sons defendant! In the nation'i lint ipy trial tine the United States entered the war to total of 117 years In prison for espionage conspiracy. Three wera given 30 years' Imprisonment each; three others, Including a woman, IS years each, and one 12 years. Judge Coddard, In passing sentence, told the defendants he was "not only punishing you for your treachery," but "warning others like you that such acts will not be tolerated." The Illegal activities occurred before the United States entered the war otherwise the defend ants would have been subject to the death penalty. Those sentenced to 20 years the maximum possible penal ty were: Kurt Frederick Ludwlg, 86. native of Fremont, O., called by the government the "brains of the ring." He was arrested on bus near Cle Elum, Wash., last summer. Bene C. Froellch, 30, former drafted soldier stationed at Gov ernors island here headquarters of the 1st army, accused of observing the names of depart ing ships and transmitting them to German submarines. Paul T. Borchardt, 88, former German army major. Those given 19 years Included: Mrs. Helen Pauline Mayer, 26 American-born housewife, ac cused of mailing letters In secret writing te German agents trans mining American military information. They will go to the post at 8:30. J'VILLE RESIDENT A. T. McClay, Sacramento. Cal., an entomologist who spends much of his time in the orchard trade here, today pointed to Lloyd W. Whitney Jacksonville, as a model of honesty. A few days ago Mr. McClay lost a valuable diamond ring. He advertised his loss for three days In the Mail Tribune at a total cost of 93 cents. Mr Whit ney saw the ad. found the dia mond ring lying on a street In Jacksonville and returned it to Mr. McClay. Today a friend of Mr. McClay. Georise S. Green. 1410 Euclid avenue, advertised the loss of his wallet containing $40 and various license and ldentlflca tion cards. Mr. Green hoped he would have as good fortune as Mr. McClay. Shaughnessy Denies Will Quit Stanford Palo Alto, Cal., March 1J VP) Clark D. Shauchnessy said today he was not giving up hit job as head football coach at Stanford university to go to Vale, Maryland university, or any other school. "I don't know how these rumors about my leaving Stan ford got started, but I do know there is nothing to the talk that I want to leave the Pacific cont," ShaiiRhnessy said In an interview at his Palo Alto residence.
