Extension Service Red Soldiers Mop Up Rostov Streets Give Jersey Bulls To Boost Popularity Jersey breeders through the American Jersey Cattle club are making an advertising drive at the present time to further increase the popularity of the Jersey breed with the American people, both breeders and con sumer of milk products. One thousand Jersey bulls presented by breeders all over the country will be distributed to applicants who will be selected on their qualifications as future breeders. This drive at the present time is to let the world know that Jerseys are carrying their part of the load of increasing the world's most vital food milk. The Jersey Isles were seized by the Germans on July 1, 1940. Just a few days before this, 33,000 of the 100,000 popula tion were evacuated to England. December 18, 1940, the condi tions oh the island were diffi cult, but not desperate most inhabitants went to bed at dusk because of no candles or paraf fin gasoline only for Germans, doctors, officials and tractors, short of vegetables in towns, great shortage of clothes. Fuel wood rationed, seven pounds a day per family; shoes repaired with wooden soles. It appears from recent history of these islands that they will no longer be available for Jersey founda tion stock, and Jersey breeders will be compelled to use domes tic blood lines in the future, as every evidence points to the fact that the Germans have con fiscated the entire cattle popu lation of the Jersey Isles for food. Hybrid Corn Acreage Increases In Valley Acreage of hybrid strains of corn in Jackson county is in creasing rapidly. Last year 90 percent of corn raised was hy brid. As this type of corn will not reproduce it is necessary to buy new seed from qualified dealers each year. The middle west has been the preferred breeding ground for hybrid corn in the past, some has been pro duced in Idaho and during the past three years southern Ore gon breeders have taken up this work. Ben Day of Rams Valley be gan breeding hybrid corn in 1940, using Wisconsin 525 and planting five acres of parent stock. This proved to be an early variety but did not yield as high as some other varieties For the 1941 season Mr. Day chose Wisconsin 69& and har vested crop of hybrid seed corn which will shortly be on the market. This is a well root ed, strong, sturdy grower with very high yield and a good his tory behind it which is neces sary to perpetuate the strain in of this corn is for sale to grow ers in Oregon this year and we believe in patronizing home in dustry when a good product is available. Burlap Sacks Made. Available by WPB Additional supplies of burlap sacks for wool and seed potatoes have been made available by the War Production Board. The con servation of existing supplies is still necessary, as supplies of burlap will continue to be very short. By R. G. Fowler, County Agent. 4-H Leaders. Members In National Defense 4-H leaders and members of Jackson county are mindful that national defense leaders have stressed Importance of 4-H club work in the national defense program. 4-H club boys and girls who have been working for the past years in projects dealing with the production of food, preservation of food, prop er nutrition and clothing econ omy are well fitted to fall in line with those phases of the national defense program. In Jackson county special stress is being placed on the garden, poultry and canning projects. The projects are ones that the national leaders have asked an rural families to participate in and it is the goal of Jackson county 4-H workers that every rural 4-H club family In the county have a garden and a flock of chickens, and will have canned part of their winter's supply of food. Club members are being en couraged and urged to produce heavier meat animals, thereby supplying more pounds of meat without increasing the number of he-d of livestock, and to give dairy cattle the finest feed and care possible in order to produce strong, vigorous cows, thus se curing the maximum milk pro duction. Special emphasis will be placed this year on remodel ing and renovating dresses in order to make the present cloth ing supply last as long as pos sible. In all, Jackson county's club members should turn in a very creditable year as their part in Oregon's defense work. The a stable manner. While the project work tn the 4-H club program can represent an Important part of defense work, and while it is recognized that club members, through their well organized groups can be of other service to the defense pro gram, it is still realized by those working in the program tnai me present contribution that toe club program can make Is that of establishing the stability and building the character of the young people of the country, and that in times such as these this is certainly a vital need. Those ol us working in the Ex tension Service want to urge parents of the young people to Give all of their support and backing to the local leadeis who will be carrying this responsi bility at a time when such responsibility is definitely an added burden. We must realize and help these leaders realize that their work with the young people Is a vital thing and one in which they have Just reason to take a great deal of pride By L. E. Francis, County Club Agent. Weather Starts Victory Gardens Recent warm sunny weather has dried the soil in many locations so it can be readily worked. This allows spring gar dening to be started in earnest. Preparation of a good planting bed is of course essential for a successful garden. If this soil preparation has been done. there are several vegetables that should be planted at this time. Early cabbage may be planted from now until April IS. Golden Acre is an excellent early cab bage and plants are now avail able. This variety may be fol lowed about April 1 by Copen hagen Market. Two dozen plants of each variety will be sufficient for an average family of five people. In setting the cabbage plants, care should be taken to set them deep into the soil. The entire stem and base of the leaves should be covered. This helps prevent the cabbage from growing on a long stem. Lettuce Plants If you have been unable to seed lettuce di rectly in the garden, you can still set the plants. Three dozen plants set now will furnish good supply of lettuce during May. As lettuce is a cool weath er plant, It is too late to sow the seed and get lettuce to head successfully. Leaf lettuce may still be seeded. Spinach may still be seeded for a few days although it is getting rather late and may run to seed. A fifty-foot row of the Giant Leaf variety should suf fice. Be sure and thin the Dlants at least two Inches apart. If left closer each plant will be small and the spinach will be unsatisfactory. Carrots A 50-foot row of car rots planted now will supply carrots during July and August. L-nantenay ana Mantes are ex cellent varieties. One-half ounce of seed will plant SO feet. It should be planted one-half deep ana tne sou firmed. Onion seed should be planted now. Early seedings of onions give the plants a good start and they are better able to stand attacks from maggots and thrlp later in the spring. One-half ounce of seed will plant' 100 feet of row. Mixing one ounce of calomel with this one-half ounce of seed and sowing them to gether one inch deep will effec tively control onion maggots. Calomel is expensive and one ounce will cost about 40 cents. It can be purchased at a drug store. Cauliflower is not very well adapted to this climate, but if grown, the plants should be set now. Two dozen plants of the snowball variety will be suffi cient. They will be mature in July. By C. B. Cordy, Assistant County Agent. The Grange Lake Creek Grange Lake Creek Grange met Feb. 27 with Master Myrtle Charley presiding. Before grange, a 4-H achieve ment program was held. The Girls Sewing club gave a play with Janet Charley, Dorothy Stanley and Margaret Henry in the cast. The Beef club present ed Charmayne Lea Charley and Leland M. Charley in a tap dance, violin and trombone duet and a song. Mr. Francis, 4-H club leader, gave some magig, stunts. Before giving the young peo ple their awards Mr. Francis gave an excellent talk. Lake Creek has the ' largest club of 0-year members In Jack son county. Special credit was given to Leila and Lillian Damon on their winning a state award at the state fair. The Sewing club won the cup presented by the Business and Professional Women's club of Medford. This makes the second year for the cup to be held in School Board Rapt Shipyard Union Portland, Ore., March 12 (81 The Portland school board passed a resolution last night condemning alleged discrimina tion in the employment of workers in shipyards of this district. The directors passed it 5 2 and sent it to the U. S. de partment of labor and war pro duction board. Directors said the resolution was aimed at AFL unions which. hold closed shop agreements in the yards. They asserted negroes and holders of CIO cards were barred.
