Three cheers and a gob of "tigers" for a couple of Jack son county class B basketball teams Bill Emigh's Butte Falls Loggers for their unmatchable feat of capturing the state "B" championship, and Leonard Pat terson's Jacksonville Redsklus for their title achievement in the SOCE invitational tourna ment. The Loggers weren't sup posed to be in the same class with Powers and Westport, the defending champs, in the state "B" meet in Eugene last week. All the "experts" were tabbing those two clubs as the ones to. beat. And that's Just what Butte Falls did, ousting Powers in the semi-finals and Westport in the finals to attain the highest class B cage honor in Oregon. And the Loggers won every game de cisively, loo, proving ueyuuu the shadow of a doubt they are the best of the little-school teams. Incidentally, it was sort of a "third time is a charm" con quest for the Loggers. Twice be fore, in 1939 and 1940, the Butte Falls club gunned for the state toga, but couldn't quite make it. Jacksonville's SOCE tour ney victory wasn't so import ant, nor so unexpected, but highly satisfying nonetheless. The Redskins could be the second best "B" team in the state, for in two games against Butte Falls, the best, they lost by just one point. Now if Russ Acheson's Med ford Tigers can only claw their way to the state A tourna' ment championship, what a sweep it will be for little old Jackson county. Three titles in Oregon's three major prep tour naments! Complete domination of the state high school basket ball situation! What a dream! Just what chance have the Battling Bengals in that Salem meet, which opens tonight and runs through Saturday? Can they possibly win it? Have they wnai ii taxes.' This department sincerely be lieves Medford CAN go the whole distance, and that it cer tainly does possess champion ship requirements. This is not prediction the Tigers WILL do it, only that it is very much within the realm of possibility. Favorable to the locals is the fact they are in the easier of the two eight-team brackets, although they face one of the state's toughest teams in Mac high in the first round. But. of the four pre-tourna-ment favorites S a 1 e m, As toria, Baker and North Bend only Salem is In the upper bracket with the Tigers. The other three are in the lower eight, where they might wear each other down battling each other. If the Medford can topple Mac high in that first game at 1 p. m. Wednesday, they should have an easier fight on their hands in the second round against either Beaverton or St. Helens, who tangle in the first round. Winning both these games the Tigers would then be sitting in the semi-finals, facing probably Salem. Salem, in the opening round, plays Corvallls, and an expected victory over the Spar tans would put the host quintet against either Vale or Mt. Angel in the second round. If the upper bracket action should develop along these lines, it would then be Medford versus Salem for the right to enter the finals against one of the following lower bracket clubs: North Bend, Columbia Preps, Baker, Oregon City, As toria. Fred Lennard, business man ager of the Medford Athletic as sociation, said today he had re ceived word from Klamath Falls that baseball officials in that city were interested in retaining their Oregon State league fran chise and would probably be represented at next Sunday's loop meeting in Portland, at which time the circuit will be definitely formed. Medford, Silverton, Albany and Eugene are the only teams assured of franchises thus far, but Sunday's meeting is expec ted to increase the list by two or four more teams. AP) Oregon AAU officials decided yesterday to send both Bradford Clothiers, state champions, and state tourney, to the national Signal Oil, runners-up in the AAU basketball tournament at Denver. (AP) The entry of Cornelius Warmer dam, America's premier pole vaulter who has bettered the world record both indoor and outdoor, was received today for the Chicago relays. SUBMARINES BOOST JAP LOSS Washington, March 10. (AP) The navy announced today that U. S. submarines In the western Pacific had sunk a Jap anese destroyer and naval tanker and put out of action an aircraft carrier and three cruisers. The submarine actions cover ed the week ending March 6. They raised to 18 the total of Japanese vessels sunk by United States submarines and to 138 the total of all types of enemy ships sunk by the army and navy In the western Pacific. Word of the sinkings was given out in navy communique, number 52 of the war, based on reports received up to 1:30 p. m PWT today.
