Only eleven licenses were issued, two more than during January, 1941. Starting last April, romance flourished in Jackson county, continuing until last November when It began to decrease. The lump continued during December. Confers Hare Fred A. Cuth bert, member of the University of Oregon faculty and a consult ant of the Northwest Regional Planning Board, conferred here today with Frank J. Van Dyke, coordinator of the cantonment civilian coordinating board. Mr. Cuthbert was returning north after making a study of com munity problems created by army camps in California. Ayres of Jacksonville. e e Ski Accidents Two ski acci dent! at Crater Lake yesterday were reported today by the Crater Lake national park office in the Medford federal building. O James F. Koonan of Klamath Falls suffered a puncture wound at 3:45 p. m. when he fell on his skt pole while participating in slalom race. The lnch-and-a-half wound was In his right leg. He was given first aid by Ranger W. T. Frost. Ted Tib bett of Grants Pass was injured at 1:30 p. m. when the metal edge of his ski caused an Inch laceration on the inside of his left ankle. He was given first aid by Ranger O. W. Foiles and Chief Ranger J. Carlisle Crouch. Bill Hilton, son of Mrs. Paul Hilton of Klamath Falls, was examined by a physician at Crater Lake yesterday, when he complained of sever pains in his stomach. Simmons. 7,5331 Medford postoffic sold 7,533 motor vehicle tax stamps to the close, of business Katiirrfao Postmaster Frank DeSouta an nounced today. Saturday's sales totaled 853 stamps, largest for any single dav. Several nnt. offices in Jackson county ran out ot tne stamps and their patrons were taken car of at the Medford postoffice. Sale of the stamps was con tinuing today. The new federal law Imposing the motor vehicle tax went into effect today. LONG MISSING SALMON RETURN TO COLUMBIA Astoria. Ore.. Feb. 2. W) Fishermen reported today that chlnook salmon wer entering the Columbia river three-week absence, th longest nsn tamme in the memory of old-timers. Several illnettera ram. In with good catches, and were getting 20 cents a pound on the fresh fish market. Steelhead sold at 12 cents a pound. Completing their three years Of senior high school studies at mid-year and not returning for the start of the second semester this morning were eight gradu ating seniors. One other, Ann VanValiah. finished her high school course the first semester but registered this morning to continue her studies. Th eight wer Arthur Dun ford, James Glenn, Frank Hay ner, Ernst Ludwig, Milton Pitts, Clifford Quigley, Arthur Satter le and Weldon Zundell. Pitt and Quigley left school some Urn ago to join th navy, hav ing completed their studies ahead of time. Diplomas will be awarded the mid-year graduates at regular spring graduation ex ercises. 32 From Junior High Mid-year transfers from the Junior high's 9A class to the sophomore class at senior high school numbered 32, and the Identical number ot 6A grade school students took up their 7B studies In Junior high this morn ing. The total Medford public school enrollment on the first day of th second semester was 2,349, an increase of 64 over the 2,285 total for the same period last year. ROBBERY ' Klamath Falls, Fab. 2 W) There were plenty of cold feet here Saturday night in a cop-and-robber chase that saw two men swim across snow-banked streams. David Cook. Colville, Wash told police a hitch-hiker robbed him of $100 and that he escaped being tied in the woods only by swimming across chilly Wood river. The hitch-hiker, armed with gun, commandeered an automo bile driven by H. H. Norton, Eugene, but ran into a ditch within 200 yards. He fled Into th woods. Sheriff Lloyd Low said Klam ath Indian reservation officers went In chase, and Jailed a sop ping wet man identified as John C. Suttle, 22, Bend, who ad mitted swimming Crooked creek twice before being arrested. Low said th money waa re covered. Roosevelt Asks Loan For China Washington, Fab. 2 President Roosevelt has asked congress to approve a $500, 000,000 loan for China. The boys, state police said, gave their names as Calvin S. Tilley. 15 and Albert A. Tilley, 14. both of Marysvllle; Leon S. Mackey 14 and Mervin Knouse, 13, also of Marysvllle. and Alton Clendenin. 13. of Vuba City. Police arrested the five young sters in a service station at Riv erside avenue and Sixth street about 10:45 p. m., while they were in possession ot a 1934 Ford sedan owned by O. M. Young of route 4. Under ques tioning they admitted stealing the car in Ashland, police stated. Retracing their trail since leaving Marysvllle about 4 p. m. last Friday, the youths told pol ice they walked to Yuba City where they stole a 1938 Olds coupe and drove to Yreka, stop ping near Chlco to steal five gal lons of gasoline from a farm tractor. They abandoned the Olds In Yreka, police said they related, and stole a Chevrolet station wagon ther early Saturday night. Two miles north of the Oregon California Una they threw out a large mail sack, pol ice said they recalled, and then drov Into Ashland where the station wagon was abandoned and the Ford sedan stolen. Pol ice said the station wagon was not a federal vehicle, but prob ably was owned by a contract mail carrier. Calvin S. Tilley, driver of the stolen cars, told police he was on probation in California for the previous theft of three auto mobiles.
