AGE TEN MEDFORD MAIL TRD3UNE. MEDFORD. OREGON, THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 1942. MOBILIZE SKILLS Court House Auditorium Filled To Hear Plans For Feb. 16 Census Taking. Jackson county women's re sponse to mobilization was spontaneous yesterday afternoon as representatives from organi zations throughout the county filled the courthouse auditorium to hear Mrs. Ronald Prentis, chairman of the Multnomah county - board of mobilization. Due to illness Mrs. Saidie Orr Dunbar was unable to appear in Medford and her speaking tour is being filled by Mrs. Prentis. The speaker pointed out that "mobilization of women is be ing tried in America first in Oregon at the request of the governor, In order that he may learn the number of women available to fill occupations now being held by men. This mobiliz ation is to be accomplished Feb. 16 in a house-to-house canvass of the state at which time wom en will fill out printed blanks listing their possible talents, convertible skills- and skills through training. Full Listing Aim Purpose of the registration is to have on hand a complete list ing of Oregon women's abilities in order that a quick and organized-change of employment may be made as available men are called to the front, or scenes of military crises. As explained by Governor Sprague, this Is an emergency call of women 18 years and over and gives each woman an opportunity to aid In national defense at a prevail ing wage if an emergency arises in this state to the point of call ing women. Mrs. Prentis explained that women in England were not given an opportunity to list their skills but were called into varied industries, fields, and activities without warning, hav ing to leave behind them their homes and families in an effort to keep British war industries going for the fight for freedom. Here women will be called where they are best fitted and needed. It is hoped that through this survey convertible skills of Ore gon women will be discovered, such as ability to work in air plane factories through sewing skills, or handling of power driven machines because of her sewing machine ability and many others. Harvest Need Been Particularly Important was the approaching harvest labor shortage which will exist throughout the state this year. With a 20 per cent increase in production and men being called to the army, navy and factories the problem of food harvest will fall upon the woman. The federal government has said, Mrs. Prentis pointed out, either women must aid In the harvest or be drafted to it. The employ ment service is considering such a plan of recruiting women who will contact other available har vest help through formation of organized units to take care of J me crops in oracr that no food will be wasted this year. It was explained by Mrs. Prentis that registration on the mobilization blanks does not mean that women will receive immediate employment Rather it means that women will be classified where their skills will be most useful. In no instance will they be employed at a low er wage than a man in a similar position. Honor Stressed The visitor pointed out that the women of Oregon should consider it an honor and priv ilege to be residing In the state to undertake such a project first. If proven successful it is expect ed that the survey will become nation-wide in scope. Preceding the county-wide meeting Mrs. Leonard ' Carpen ter, Jackson county chairman of the Board for Mobilization of Women with Mrs. Prentis met divisional chairmen to complete preliminary arrangements. Divisional chairmen include Mrs. Earl Leever, Ashland; Mrs. Glenn Jackson, district No. 1, Phoenix, Griffin Creek, Orchard Home, Talent; Mrs. Raymond Driver, district No. 2, Jackson ville, Oak Grove, Perrydale, Central Point, Upper and Lower Applcgate, Roxy Ann, highway to Eagle Point; Mrs. J. C. S. Weills, district No. 3, Rogue River, Gold Hill, Wlmer, Sams Valley, Trail, Antelope, McLeod, Shady Rock and Union Creek; Mrs. O. A. Eden, district No. 4, Eagle Point, Derby, Butte Falls, Brownsboro, Shady Cove, Reese l and Lake Creeks; Mrs. Ralph ! Boutelle, Medford with Mrs. Aletha Vawter, Mrs. T. W. Miles, Mrs. D. F. Newton, Mrs. Harry Rlnabarger, Mrs. Henry Nord wick and Mrs. O. J. Halboth assisting. E A A money order for $128.30, representing a week's "penny-a-plane" collection was mailed yesterday by the Redmen and Pocahontas lodges to the sec retary of war for the purchase of fighter planes. , The pennies deposited by the public in the 100 tins placed in stores around town were col lected for the second time Tues day. The first week the 100 tins yielded $104.05. Several more cans are to be put out as merchants who do not now have them have asked the lodges to place them in their establishments, the committee in charge said. It was added that the public has been showing a growing Interest in the plan to deposit In the tins the same number of pennies as Japanese planes shot down by Americans the previous day. FIND DEAD DEER Gold Hill, Jan. 29. (Spl) A large buck deer was found dead in the Soren Christensen field this week, a short distance from the Pacific highway.
