Gard ner of Route 2, Ashland, who underwent a major operation In Medford Community hospital last Saturday, was reported by Mr. Gardner today as getting along nicely. A state examiner will be in council chambers on the top floor of city hall from 8 a. m. to 5 p. m. and applicants are asked to report to him. . Roberts was fined $2 SO for double parking his car without a driver in the seat. Returns Mrs. H. G. Shearer, former Medford resident, has returned here to make her home after spending the past three months in Dash. Point, Wash., where she visited her cousin. Mrs. Shearer arrived this morn ing by train. As yet she has not determined where she will reside here. e e Return Chief of Police Cla tous McCredle and City Inspec tor Frank Rogers returned to Medford last night from Cali fornia where the police chief made a survey of cities adjacent to army cantonments while Rog ers was attending the Pacific Coast Building Officials' confer ence in San Francisco Thursday. Friday and Saturday. Chief Mc Credle investigated-conditions in Salinas, Monterey and San Luis Obispo. The men made the trip by auto. Begins Survey Gustave O. Matter, an investigating engi neer from the Portland office of the contract distributing branch, production division, war production board, today Began a survey of small shops and plants In Jackson and Josephine counties preparatory to the pos sible setting up of a pool to handle government orders. Ar rangements for the engineering survey were made at a meeting here last Friday. Mr. Matter said he hoped to complete the survey tomorrow. e Defense Meeting All persons residing in precincts 39, 40. 41 47, 48, 54 and 55 are Invited to attend a meeting on civil ian defense in the Washington school at 7:30 tonight. After a stay in Salem, he has been located at Ashland for the past four montns. He stated that he knows the valley well and plans to make his home In this city. www Enlisted Seven men of this area have been formally enlist ed in the U. S. array at Portland since January 20, Sgt. Joseph W. Cushman, commander of the recruiting station in the Med ford federal building said today. The men were Elmer I. Ogborn, employe of Crater Lake Motors, Howard E. Denzer, Phoenix, Glann A. Kafer and Homer E. Tooley, Glendale. Victor W. Rodman, Grants Pass, Lester L. Foley, Central Point, and John R. Martin, Hilt, Cal. , . Checks Snow Arch Work, In charge of snow surveys in north ern California and all of Oregon, reports the mid-winter snow measurements are underway this week throughout the area. Work, who left yesterday for the Bend district, spent a few days at Crater Lake national park last week and reported his tests showed the snow there contained less water than last year. February and March snow fall is expected to increase the total on the ground. Plana Passengers H. Brady arrived by United Mainliner from Portland this forenoon. R. F. BODY RECOVERED, NAVY TELLS KIN Former Prospect Youth Who Died In Air Mishap To Be Buried In San Diego. The body of Thomas S. Close was recovered from the navy plana that plunged Into the sea off the North Carolina coast and took Closa and seven other men to their death last Friday, the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claud; E. Close of McLeod, were no tified by telegram last mid night. No details of the plane crash have been revealed by the navy department. Last Saturday morning Mr. and Mrs. Close received a letter from their son saying he was well and happy in his naval duties In the Norfolk area. A birthday present for his father also arrived from the youth. Saturday night a telegram came saying their son had been killed. Mrs. Close collapsed and has since been under medical care. Mr. Close, however, was making arrangements today for him and his wife to leave tonight tor San Diego, Cal., where funeral services will be held, the navy department having been asked to send the body there. The youth's wife resides In San Di ego. Tommy Close, formerly with the CCC, enlisted in the navy March 16, 1937, and was assign ed to naval aviation. He was 2t, years old last August 4. He com pleted his second year in tne Prospect high school. His par ents formerly resided in Med ford. Tommy was born In Pang born. Ark., and came to south ern Oregon with his parents in 1927. On their way to San Diego the parents are to be Joined in Sacramento, Cal., by Mrs. Clo se's sister, Mrs. Norma Richman. Announce Winners Of Aviation Essay Contest of Rialto Margery Van Valiah, talent ed student of the Medford Jun ior high school, was announced winner of the Rialto theatre'r unique aviation essay contest which was a feature at the school last week. Students were Invited to writ a short 500 word essay on "what major part has the 'cavalcade of avia tion' played In Uncle Sam's na tional defense." The grand prize won by Mar gery la a personally autograph ed photograph of Abbott and Costello. popular comedy team of the movies, and two passes to see "Cavalcade of Aviation," which plays today and tomor row at the Rlalto theatre. She will receive her coveted photo graph at Friday's assembly. Nine other students were awarded prizes of passes. They are Carmen McGrew, Bill Had rick. Bill Berry, Dorothy Hum pel, Bob Boyer and Betty Cox, Rollie Berry, Billy Saxburg, Barabara Fairfield and Helen Storm. PAUL J. CRATTY OF Paul J. Cratty, of Chicago, be loved brother of Mrs. Alphonse W. Aya of 205 Crater Lake ave nue, Medford, passed away at a local hospital Monday morning. Mr. Cratty was born Novem ber 18, 1878 at Peoria, 111. He re ceived his education as an elec trical engineer at the Universi ties of Wisconsin and Illinois and spent his active business life in Chicago. He had been recuper ating here following a serious Illness since last March. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Dor othy E. Cratty of Chicago, and sister, Mrs. Aya. Funeral services will be con ducted from the Perl funeral home Thursday at 11 a. m.. Rev. Sherman L. Divine, pastor of the First Presbyterian church offic iating.
