PAGE THREE Society nd Clubs by Betty Shoenaier McCormick-Spalding Wedding Read At St. Mark's Church Mr. and Mrs. D. Ford McCor mick of Eagle Point announce the marriage of their daughter. Clarita, to Robert Spalding, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis J. Spalding, 219 North Oakdale avenue. The ceremony was read at St. Mark's Episcopal church Sunday with the Rev. Herald G. Gardner officiating. The bride was given in marriage by her father, D. Ford McCormick, and had for her only attendant, her sister, Mrs. C. H. Stoddard. Ro bert Naumes was best man. Only immediate members of the two families were present for the wedding. Mrs, Spalding graduated from Medford high school and attend ed University of Oregon. Mr. Spalding, also a graduate of Medford high school and Stan ford university, is a member of Theta Delta Chi social fratern ity and Phi Beta Kappa, na tional scholastic honorary. Hurd, guest speaker at the Business and Professional W o m e n's club meeting Thursday evening at the Girls' Community club house, discussed the "bill of rights" and the responsibilities of American citizens regarding this democratic writing. In keeping with the club's topic, "How Legislation Can Af fect the Business Women," Mrs. Hurd pointed out that "eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." She explained that American citizens must be on the constant watch in order that American liberties are not lost. Discussing the closed shop the speaker pointed out that a closed shop would take away the privilege of men working where they desired and would usurp the privilege of congress in levying taxes, by forcing payment of initiation fees and a tax for the right to work. The topic of the evening s meeting, lobbying for democ racy," was In charge of Mrs. Kathryn Davidson and Mrs. Joe E. Earley. Mrs. C. O. Larison, accompanied by Mrs. Eva Marsh sang three selections. Defense Program To Be Discussed At Council Meeting For the purpose of acquaint ing parents in Jackson county with the county defense pro gram the Jackson County Coun cil of Parents and Teachers is holding a meeting at the Lin coln school gymnasium Wednes day. At that time leaders in the county defense program will outline their plans and prob lems. An invitation Is extended to all parents and teachers in the county to be present. The business meeting will open at 10 a. m. with the invo cation by Dr. Sherman L. Di vine. Following a cafeteria lunch at 12 noon at the Girls' Community clubhouse for which a small charge will be made, the afternoon session will con vene for the defense program at 1 o'clock. Appearing on the program will be Captain S. M. Tuttle Jackson county defense commit tee chairman; Lloyd William son, John Boyle, Supt E. H. Hedrick, Ed Mann, C. C. Hag gard and Dr. L. D. Inskeep. Public Invited To DeMolay Installation The public is invited to De Molay installation to be held Wednesday at 8:00 p. m. at the Masonic hall, accord ing to an announcement today by officers of the lodge. Fol lowing installation there will be an informal dance to which Daughters of Job members are invited. Graduate Nurses To Entertain Board Members Two members of the state board of nurses, Mrs. Minnie Laird and Mrs. Ethel Norene, of Portland, will be guests at a meeting of District No. 4 Graduate Nurses to be held Wednesday at 8 p. m. at Sacred Heart hospital. The advanced class in First Aid for nurses under Dr. Lawrence Buonocore has been postponed until Friday night. Blease, 73, who as governor of South Carolina issued nearly 3,000 pardons and as U. S. senator opposed the League of Nations, died last night. He underwent an opera tion Saturday. He was an almost perennial candidate for public office in South Carolina from 1890 to 1938. He served In the senate from 1925 to 1931. Blease bitterly attacked Amer ica's entry into the first world war and President Woodrow Wilson's policies. In 1926 he prevented a senate vote on a resolution of adherence to the world court by conducting a one-man filibuster. He was South Carolina gov ernor from 1911 to 1915 and gained national prominence by use of the pardoning power. TRAWLERS LOST London, Jan. 20.
