NAZI ATTACK ON ALLIED SHIPPING IN SPRING SEEN Two Torpedoings In Atlantic This Week Viewed As Start By Analyist. By Dewltt Mackenslo (Wide World war analyit.) The linking of a Panamanian tanker in our own home waten oft the Long Island coast, pre sumably by an axis submarine, looks mighty like the harbinger of the all-out U-boat campaign which Herr Hitler is likely to Inaugurate when the good weather arrives and that's not so far away. It's hardly likely the fuehrer would undertake a major offen sive at this time of year, al though this sinking follows the torpedoing of a big steamer off Nova Scotia Tuesday with heavy loss of life. The Atlantic kicks up too much fuss in winter to permit of concerted submarine activity. However, come the spring and the allies must be prepared to see the Nazis cut loose with a heavy drive against shipping, not only with submersibles but with bombers and torpedo planes. We mustn't forget how vitally Important the outcome of the battle of the Atlantic Is both to the allies and the axis. The stream of supplies which Is pouring from this country Is what Hitler has to fear most, next to his present Inability to replenish his own resources. And this threat is no mean one. We can't Just look down our noses and rely on the fact that the kaiser's submarine campaign In the World war failed. It failed after the United States got into the conflict and provided warships with which to counter the menace, but the Germans missed winning the war with their U-boats by nose. I've mentioned before In this column, but It's worth repeat ing, that things got so bad during the kaiser's unrestricted U-boat offensive that the great Admiral Jellicoe, commander in chief of the British grand fleet, took the unprecedented step of writing direct to the prime min ister to warn that unless the submarine sinkings were got In hand, the allies might lose the war. That's how bad things were when we came in, and Hit ler won't overlook such a bet. ' Then we must note that things have changed since the World war. The air has pro vided new and frightful men ace not only to merchant ship ping but to warships. It Is my personal thought that Hitler Is likely to cut loose against the British navy and our naval ships In European waters In an effort to shatter the allied protection of the Atlantic and the Medi terranean. The axis offensive which seems to be boiling up in the Mediterranean now may easily be part and parcel of this strategy. There Is no way of estimating accurately what power Hitler can unleash in submarines. Sup posedly he has a big fleet, and guesses have placed the total at 600 and more. Whatever the number may be, we do know that he has weakened his Atlan tic force by sending submarines to the Mediterranean and the Black sea, these being small U-boats which could be rhipped overland and thus avoid passing through the Strait of Gibraltar and running the British naval gantlet. However, it would be unsafe to assume that his wick of sea-wolves Isn't formidable on the Atlantic side. LOCALlElENT IN STATE POLICE Capt. B. J. Slants announced today that Frank Henry Hansen, a graduate of Medford high school and a resident of the val ley all his life, had Joined the Oregon State Police and would receive his preliminary training In this district. Pvt. Hansen re ported for duty this morning. The new state policeman has been employed at the Monarch Seed and Feed company, which position he resigned to accept a post with the state police. AUTO TAX STAMPS' SALE DELAY TOLD, NO GLUE MIX-UP Washington, Jan. IS. UP) Automobile-use tax stamps go on sale today, but many motor ists will have to furnish their own glue to fasten them on, and many others may be unable to find a place to buy them. j The treasury said shipping de-1 lays would keep some postof- j fices and federal revenue of fices from getting their supplies immediately. The stamps sell for $2.09 and will be good from February 1 until July 1, when a $3 stamp will b required for the following full year. i The glue mix-up resulted from regulations which In 23 states prohibited stickeri on windshields. The glue was put on the back instead of the front, but subsequently most of the states waived the rules to per mit display of the stamps. NEW TRIAL ASKED T The defendant, J. N. Adams, of Puyallup, Wn., by his attor ney, Charles W. Rcames, filed a motion for a new trial in the circuit court in the case of Waldo Green vs. J. N. Adams On November 28, 1941, after a trial lasting four days, a Jury returned a verdict in favor of the plaintiff. Green, for $11,000 for a broken leg sustained In a motorcycle and automobile ac cident. The motion for new trial Is being argued In the circuit court today by Don R. New bury, attorney for plaintiff, and Reames, attorney for the defen dant. Defendant in his motion claims that the Judgment was excessive, that he has since the trial discovered new evidence, and that errors in law were committed in the trial of the case that were prejudicial to the defendant. Russian Situation to 0s Topic Church Talk Col. F. J. Miles, preacher, lecturer and soldier, of London, will speak In the First Baptist church, Medtorcr, tonight and tomorrow night at 7:30. Col. Miles has spoken In most of the larger cities of the United States and Europe. He has made an exhaustive study of the Rus sian situation. He is at present general secretary of the Russian Missionary society. Col. Miles will speak on the following sub jects, "Russian Races In the Religious Realm" and "Is the World an Iceberg or a Ship." All are invited to hear this out standing man. No admission charge. Freewill offering will be taken. Fire Loss in Grants Pass for Year $3,025 Grants Pass, Jan. IS. (Spl) Property damage caused by fire in 1041 totaled $3,023.89 or about SO cents per capita, ac cording to Grants Pass fir de partment statistics. Medford's fire loss last year totaled $7,371 or about 63 cents per capita, It was shown in the department's annual report last week.
