TO LOAN CHIEF SAYS Washington. Jan 13. Jesse Jones, federal loan admin istrator, announced today $400,000,000 program for mak ing synthetic rubber which he said would virtually end the American rubber shortage In about 18 months. Jonea told reporters that the president had authorized him to go ahead with a plan to build enough new factories to turn out 400,000 tons of synthetic rubber a year. He estimated the plants could be ready by the middle of 1943 and, along with other rubber sources would be enough not only to fill all mili tary, but a limited amount of civilian needs. Including auto mobile Urea, In the meantime, Jones said, there Is enough rubber to meet t!"11 essential needs of the United States until the new plants can be completed. BRITISH PUT END TO LIBYA THREAT Cairo, Egypt, Jan, IS. ff British middle east headquarters announced today the captvre of the village of Salumwn Egypt, where axlt troops had helc out as a threat to the comn.iinlca tions of British empire forces invading Libya . A Transvaal Scottish regiment took the village, an outlying post of the Cerman-Itallar Hal faya (Hellfire) past position, a communique said "About 380 prisoners were captured," it reported, "of which rather mora than half were Cer man." Advanced British mechanized forces were reported to have reached the road from Agheila on the Oulf of Sirte, to Mirada a desert city 70 miles to the south, 'along which general Una the enemy appears to be pre paring to make a stand. The British air force lit add! tlon to providing effective tup- port for the advance tioopt were said to have heavily bombed Halfaya ANOTHER LAONCHINO Portland, Ore., Jan. 11. Pi '-Workmen took ten minutes off their lunch hour Saturday to watch the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation launch Its latest lib erty freighter, the Robert Fulton, YN TO RUBBER END SHORTAGE LACK OF ALLIED AIR POWER AIDS MIKADO'S IHREAT Secretary Knox's Statement Viewed As Assuring By MacKenzie; Hitler's Woes By DeWltt MacKenale (Wide World War Analyst) Today's report of the progress of the battle of the Pacific Is a re-run of yesterday's record a continuation of Japanese suc cess. The sum-total of this Is that the Mikado's forces gradually are extending their Island bases towards Java and Sumatra and Singapore the chief prizes which they seek at this juncture and are getting set for a ma jor onslaught on these great ob jectives. If the Japs gain these goals, they will have fresh sinews of war which are likely to carry them far. The crucial allied weakness in the air becomes more marked daily. We are told that both American and British reinforcements are on the way to the far east, but whether they include the vital warplanet Is not disclosed. Despite this temporarily gloomy picture, one of the most reassuring pronouncements of recent days Is Secretary of the Navy Knox's declaration that the Japanese assault won't be allowed to distract this coun try's attention from the first business at hand the destruc tion of Hitler. That done," says Colonel Knox bluntly, "the while axis fabric will collapse." Probably the colonel, being a two-fisted Individual himself, would be the last to claim that this medicine Is easy for our people to take. They want retrl button for the barbaric murder of American civilians and fight Ing men. Still, like It or not, the secretary Is giving the common sense of the thing a view held by all the allied military com' mands. Colonel ' Knot'i statement comes at a time when Hitler's difficulties might encourage a popular demand for a diversion of allied fighting forces to the far east That Is what the fuehrer Is praying we will do. It takes de termination not to, but It la the only strategy which can give us certain victory In a reasonable length of time. We can bomb Tokyo after we have the nazi chief under lock and key or whatever It it they do with peo ple of his Ilk. The Jobian woes of Hitler are so many that one wonders whether perchance he hasn't In vented tome of them to throw ut off the trail. Dally the Rus sians continue to throw back his weakened lines, and the winter ! take Its terrible toll of life.
