"To train highly promis ing young men for aervice to the nation," a free Harvard education will be offered this spring in open competition through national scholarships for hieh school seniors in 17 slates in the middle west, south and far west, Harvard announced today. The scholarships carry maxi mum stipends ot 84,600 for the four-year course and may be renewed at $1,200 a year for graduate study. High school seniors must apply by Feb 20 and the winners, numbering at least 30, will be announced in May. The best applicants are chosen regardless of their financial cir cumstances, officials explained, then the stipend Is adjusted Individually according to need, with a maximum of $1 000 In the first year and $1,200 annu ally thereafter for boys whose families cannot pay anything for their college education. Two hundred national scholars have entered Harvard since the plan was established in 1934 and have made outstanding records. The three graduating groups have gone Into medicine, govern ment service, engineering, scien tific research, business, law and journalism.
