Noel of Central Point and Jo seph Baron of Prospect drove cars involved in a slight mishap at Riverside avenue and Main street yesterday afternoon, ac cording to a report on file today. Council To Meat Upper Grade Teachers' council will meet in the county courthouse Saturday at 10:30 a. m. A round-table discussion on .the remedial pro gram in the schools will be led . by Miss Edith Bork of the Lin f coin training school at Ashland. First Aid Class An announce ment was made today at the Red Cross office that a first aid class was being organized for Rogue River and Gold Hill resi dents at Gold Hill high school Tuesday at 7:30 p. m. J. B. Meehan will be instructor. Son Born Mr. and Mrs. James Stewart, 50 Modoc avenue, re ceived word today of the birth ot a son yesterday to their eon-In-law and daughter. Mr and Mrs. Paul Lane of Roseburg. Mrs. Lane Is the former Helen Stewart of this city. Ranger Hera Richard Tub man, Rogue River national for est district ranger at Urion Creek motored to Medford yes terday. He reported that it was 0 raining hard at Union Creek and that the 20 inches of snow which had covered the ground recently was slush. The roads were wet and slushy, he said. Old Roads Improvement In Oregon highways In the past 18 years is vividly shown by an illustrated story In the Ore gonian of June 15, 1924. The article was intended to glorify the Roosevelt highway but it was admitted that parts of the route were impassable, the stretch from Yachats to Flor ence difficult to traverse, at places the sands along the beach at low tide offered the smooth est going and at other places cars got stuck easily in the clay roadbed. Kirby, pastor of the First Methodist church, will dis cuss "The Church In Individual Experience" tonight at 7:30 o'clock at the First Presbyterian church. The public is invited to Join in observance of World's Week of Prayer. No offering will be taken. On Display Women's auxil iaries of Townsend clubs have on display a handmade bed spread in the window of the Model bakery at West Main and I South Grape streets. The spread was made in honor of Dr. Francis Townsend's birthday. January 13, which is being celebrated by clubs throughout the nation. Leavitt Returns Ernest P. Leavitt, superintendent of Cra ter Lake national park, returned this morning by train from Port land where he was a representa tive of the regional director of the national park service to a meeting called by the U. S. forest service. The meeting dis cussed fire protection plans for the Pacific northwest for the summer of 1942. THt 10VE-CRAZY PAIR Of "UDT EVE" ARE RACK AGAIN) PASSES AGED 75 William Albert Martin, 75, a resident of Oregon for the past 39 years, and of Medford for 18 years, passed away at a local nursing home at 9:30 p. m. Wednesday, after a prolonged illness. Mr. Martin was born in Jefferson, Mo. From Missouri he moved to Arkansas with his parents, where he lived until 1902, when he came to Oregon, settling at Lakeview. He came to Medford in 1928. He was proprietor of a wood yard here for several years and leaves a host of friends. His wife, Mrs. Mary France Martin, passed away in this city on Sept. 9, 1941. Mr. Martin leaves to mourn his departure one daughter, Mrs. W. S. Sweet of Klamath Falls; two sons, C. E. Martin of Cascade Gorge and W. M. Mar tin of Eagle Point; two sisters, Mrs. Retta McKimey, Oakland, Cal., and Mrs. Cora Vincent, Lakeview, Ore.; one brother, John Martin of Cedarville, Ark., also seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be con ducted from Perl funeral home Saturday at 1:30 p. m. .Rev. Shearborne of the Foursquare Gospel church officiating.. Inter ment will be In Jacksonville cemetery. NURSING COURSE Southern Oregon College of Education, Ashland, Jan. 8 (Spl.) A non-credit home nurs ing course is to be sponsored and conducted by the Southern Oregon College of Education during the winter quarter. Any woman Interested in receiving this training should contact Ruth Gough, college health nurse, who is to be the instruc tor or to call the college admin istrative offices. The class will meet from 3 to 5 p. m. every Thursday in the gymnasium of the college. SCOUTS TO START GATHERING PAPER CUNGSATURDAY A city-wide collection of waste paper begins Saturday, with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts attempting to cover the entire community for the first time in the salvage effort. Medford has been divided into districts and each district assigned to certain Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops. Some of the districts are large and the problems of handling large quantities of waste paper will not be easily solved. Ac cording to word from the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scout head quarters every effort is being made to work out a smooth and continuing plan for collection. The paper is needed for remak ing into paperboard cartons for munitions and foodstuffs. Funds raised by sale of the paper will be used by the Individual Boy and Girl Scout troops for their own needs, summer camping, de. fense stamps, etc Householders and business es tablishments can be very help ful if they will observe the fol lowing simple rules: 1. Save newspapers and mag azines separately and if possible tie them in bundles convenient for handling. 2. Place scrap paper and small boxes (flattened) in a larger car ton so that they can be carried away. 3. Keep the paper in a dry place until called for. Captain Bentley Now With Army Air Corps Ashland, Jan. 8 (Spl) Capt. Hubert B. Bentley, commander of Ashland's Battery B, Na tional Guard, before the war, has been transferred from head quarters duty at Ft. Stevens to the army air corps, it was learn ed here today. He is stationed with the 116th Observation Squadron at Gray field. Fort Lewis, Wash. The Bentley family makes its home in Olympia.
