Many homea throughout the valley took the opportunity of the holidayi at a theme for social gatherings and held open house, family dinners and other activ itles. Clubs and lodges enjoyed dancing parties and with 1941 now In the past are opening their club calendars for 1942 with Red Cross work and na tional defense as the main ac tivity. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Car penter entertained at their home at Veritas Orchards Monday evening with a dinner party honoring Mr. and Mrs. Jack Morrill of Honolulu, T. H., for mer Medford residents who are again residing here. Guests for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. A. S. V. Carpenter, Mr. and Mrs. Gain Robinson, Mr. and Mrs. George Roberts, the Mor- rills and the Leonard Carpen ters. Judge and Mrs. Earl Day, former Medford residents, now making their home in Salem, were honored Monday evening at Hotel Medford with a dinner party by members of the dinner club to which they belonged during their sojourn here. At the close of the dinner the group motored to the home of Dr. and Mrs. William P. Holt, Corning Court for an evening of bridge. Twelve attended The Days planned to leave yesterday for Salem after spend ing the past 10 days at the homes of their sons and dauRtv ters-ln-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Day, Groveland and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Day, Sams Valley. The Colony club held open house for members, their fam ilies and friends New Year's day at the clubhouse. Buffet dinner was served and the group visited and exchanged New Year'a greetings. Miss Julie Carpenter and Miss Barbara Jean Schuler enter tained a group of friends at the A. S. V. Carpenter home at "Topsldes" on the Old Stage road with New Year s eve party. Dancing comprised the evening's entertainment. Also entertaining friends was Har low Carpenter. About 80 were present. Miss Julie left New Year's night for Sarah Lawrence col lege, Bronxville, New York. Mr. and Mrs. Clatous McCre die were honored New Year's eve with a no-host anniversary party celebrating their 23rd wedding anniversary. The group gathered at the home of Pat O'Brien and Arvella Carbiener on West Main street and later motored to Burgoynea for an evening of dancing. Attending were Dr. and Mrs. W. G. Bishop, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kyle, Mr. and Mrs. Bry dane L. Sanderson, Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Steward, Mrs. Al Stoehr, Miss Joan Stoehr, Pa tricia O'Brien, Arvella Carbien er, Jim Coppell of Los Angeles, Mr, and Mrs. Tim Dailey, and Mr. and Mrs. McCredle. Mr. and Mrs. Gain Robinson entertained a few friends for a New Year's dinner rn'' evening of bridge at their horn on South Holly street. Piano Pupils Entertain Mothers Piano pupils of Mrs. Nettie B. Sheley entertained their moth ers at the home of their teacher on the Central Point road Mon day afternoon. Each pupil played two Instru mental numbers. There were also several piano duets and musical recitations. Taking part were Charles White, Joan Har rison, Carol Coulter, Betty Lou Anseth, Audrey Clark, Nancy King and Merylene Gebhard. Mrs. Burch Is the former Alice Mae Arnold, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Shirley of Medford and Sgt. Burch Is the son of W. T. Burch of Oak Grove. La. (Photo courtesy Ella Barnett, Reno), Adalene Cassman Weds Mr. Grissom At Parents' Home Miss Adalene Cassman, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Cass man of Central Point and Ever ett Grlsson, son of Mrs. Grissom of Central Point were married at quiet ceremony New Year's eve at the home of the brides parents. The bride was attended by Nellie Grissom, sister of the bridegroom. Dean Owens was best man. The two Immediate families and Mrs. Dean Owens were In attendance. A wedding dinner followed the ceremony. The couple are graduates of Central Point high school and will make their home In the valley. Seattle Man Visits Here Among holiday visitors In Medford was George Flint Peck- ham, Jr., of Seattle who arrived here by United Mainliner to spend several days with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. George Flint Peckham, Sr., of 21S Beatty street Mr. Peckham Is a former vo.j pupil of the late James Stevens and is now singing and teaching In Seattle. He is regu lar soloist at the First Church of Christ, Scientist In Seattle and a featured soloist on radio sta tion KOMO, Columbia, NBC and Mutual. For the past two years he has been with the Ship of Joy program, going to Alaska in 1939, and appeared in 30 shows with Captain Dobbsie when the company toured the northwest. He has also made several appearances with Max Dolin, formerly the Don Amazo on the Mazola oil program. Among musical notables Mr. Peckham has met recently and sung before are John Charles Thomas, Richard Crooks, Rich ard Bonelli, Dorothy Maynor and Alexander Kipms, Hussian basso formerly with Metropoli tan opera. Visitors Return To Salem Home Mrs. Rosalie Porter and two f hildren, Judy and George, of Salem, are leaving today for their home after spending the past 10 days In this city. Mrs. Porter has been a guest at the home of Dr. and Mrs. E. R. Durno and Judy and George have been staying with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Porter. Mrs. Porter Is a former Medford resident. Past Matron's Meeting Postponed Indefinitely An announcement was made yesterday that the Past Mat ron's club of Reames chapter, O.E.S., which was scheduled to meet Monday, has been cost poned indefinitely. Mrs William Green led devotions with the topic, "Think Not of Tomorrow. Report were made on Christ mas boxes of fruit, cakes, can dies and cookies which were sent to Manley Center, Portland, through the courtesy of Pierce Auto Freight. Also a box was delivered to the old peoples home at Salem and to the Homer Toberman home at San Fran cisco. A covered dish luncheon will be served Sunday, January 11 following the morning service. The occasion will follow the de dication of the newly remodeled church school and Wesley chapel. Rev. Joseph Knotts of the Leslie church, Salem, and former Medford pastor will be present and preach In the eve ning. Mrs. E. G. Roseboroueh dis closed formation of plans for the annual States banauet to be held January 27. Details will be announced later. The Loyalty circle plans to sponser a nursery for small chil dren Sunday mornings at the church so parents may attend morning services. The "Christmas World" pro gram was conducted by Mrs. Donna Taylor and Mrs Ralph Woodford, assisted by 10 mem bers who represented different groups of the service. Mary and Martha circle served refreshments. 1 Unity Members Hold Watch Party Or New Year's Eve thirty five members of the local Unity center gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kurtz on North Ivy street for a watch party. Among the guests was Dr. Robert Strong, recently re turned from China, where he has made his home for fifty years. Dr. Strong served as a mis sionary and was the first man to take Unity Into China. ADRIENNE'S Jacksonville Man Weds Miss Green In Los Angeles Married Monday in the Pueb lo Oratorio private chapel of the Chapman Park hotel in Los Angeles were Miss Thelma Green, daughter of Mrs. Reia S. Green of Los Angeles and Wil liam Harriman, son of Mrs. Edna F. Rogers of Jacksonville. The ceremony was read in the presence of relatives ana friends with the Rev. Arthur Braden conducting the cere mony. The bride, who was given in marriage by her brother, Leonard Green, wore a gown of white crepe styled with a fitted bodice and fluted skirt. Her veil was Illusion net and she carried a star shaped bou quet of gardenias and orchids. The- bride was attended by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Dcnald C. Green. She wore a dress of green tulle and carried a bou quet of pink, roses and sweet peas. James Fraser of Clarks burg, Cal., was best man. Ushers were Richard Green, brother of the bride, and Paul Sinkhorn. A reception followed In the Green room of the hotel. After a wedding trip to Mex ico Mr. and Mrs. Harriman will make their home in Los Angeles where Mr. Harriman is employ ed by the Lockheed Aircraft corporation. Mrs. Rogers Journeyed south for the wedding. Former Residents Are Local Visitors Mr .and Mrs. Ernest Rostel, former Medford residents, have been spending the holidays In Oregon, Mrs. Rostel visiting her sister In Prinvllle during Christmas- and is now in this city with friends. Mr. Rostel motored to Prinville to meet his wife. They are now residing at Estes park in the Rocky Mountain National park in Colorado where Mr. Rostel is publicity writer for the park and Mrs. Rostel is secretary to the Estes Chamber' of Commerce. During their residence here Mr. Rostel was reporter on the Mail Tribune and later publicity writer for Crater Lake National park. Mrs. Rostel was also em ployed on the Mail Tribune. Former Resident Is Local Visitor Mr. and Mrs. Walter G. Thorsell planned to return to Portland today by motor after spending the past week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dougal Young, S21 Park street. Reddy of San Francisco at Mission Santa Bar bara at Santa Barbara, Cal, December 27. Mr. Reddy is a graduate of Medford high school and at tended Gonzaga university. He has been employed by Interna tional News Service In Wash ington, D. C, and later by United Press in Spokane, Port land and Los Angeles.
