"AW Men Are Poison" Said Lavinia Prentiss Knowing Absolutely Nothing About Them Chapter One Career Girl A LTH0UGH it was only a small framed sign, Zk Lavinia never got Ji JL tired looking at it. It stood upon her desk in Armworth's Depart ment store, and it said: L. Prentiss, Assistant Buyer, Toy De partment. It had been where it now stood for over a month, and yet' it could still t.irill her when she saw it. It gave her a tense ot tremendous satisfaction. It was tangible proof that ihe was al last a highly efficient cog in the human machinery that made the huge store go 'round and 'round Further than that, it proved that she had kept faith with her Aunt Dorcas, that she had lived up to what she felt her aunt would ex- f eet of her. And that was some hing to make her feel a w a r m glow of pride. She relaxed against the back of the modernistic chair whose up holstery matched the hangings at the tall windowi, and let her thoughts drift backward remem bering. "I'm going to do my best La vinia, my dear," her aunt said, "to see that you are equipped to hold your own In a world of Strug- file and competition. After that, t'a entirely up to you." "Ye. Aunt Dorcas!" she had said, her heart singing "And I'll make you proud of me, too. Vou ust wait and seel" "If." Aunt Dorcas had said, eye ing her with one brow arched in a quiuical fashion, "you don't fall for some man and end up running big house for him." "Oh, no!" How earnestly she had said that. "Oh. no, Aunt Dor cas, never! I'm going to be a sue cess in the business or the arustie work be Independent, aelf-suffl-eient. Just like you." "That." Aunt Dorcas gald. "it what you think at sixteen. "But it's a downright crime for you not to" Ignoring the remark, Lavinia picked up some drawings. "1 presume you came to see these, she said. "So I did." tald rreddy, "1 for got." He leaned close to l-vintt tnd read aloud the printed words underneath one of the drawings. :trically Operated Hobby Horse. The Latest Thing In Toys. He shook hit head slowlv. "Well I'll be darned! S. navy practice battleships are named for ttatea cruisers for cities, destroyers for naval heroes, tubmarinea for fish. By W ATKINS E. WRIGHT there'll be much call for a toy like this one?" "Probably," said Freddy tome what sadly. "No wonder we're rapidly becoming a nation of sof ties. They won't even let the kid diet operate their own hobby horses now." "I've been thinking," tald La vlnla in her most lausiiicsslike manner, "that the price will be firohibitive. I mean, I don't be ieve there are many people who can afford such a toy." She studied the drawing for a moment. "It's a luxury really." "Of course it it," Freddy agreed. "And it encourages laziness. I wouldn't have the darn thing in the store, if I had my way." "Well, you don't hive your way," said Lavinia. "E it since you are on the floor of the toy depart ment most of the time, you should be able to get a pretty definite idea of what people want what they can afford." "Yes'm." tald Freddy. "I'll dis cuss the matter with my superior and tee what he lays. Listen. La vinia, when are you going out with me?" "Neverl" tald Lavinia. "That's an awful long time." "Yes, 1 know. Here, take these drawings along with you They are only cluttering up my desk." "I'm going to keep on asking you." "Freddy, please "I'm going to keep on asking you until they hnvr to push me in here in a wheel-chair. "It't too bad you don't use tome of that persistence in vour work " " 1 do! I had a raise lasl week." "Really?" Lavinia was pleased "Congratulations! I'm glad ... I love to see people getting ahead." "How about celebrating with re?" "No." "Damn!" tald Freddy. Then he bent and kissed Lavinit soundly upon one of her esrs. "Why you you " Lavinit gasped. "See you liter!" tild Freddy And he turned tnd fled, tlmost col liding, witl, a girl who was just entering. "Weill" the girl cried "What on earth happened to Freddy Rand?" Then she looked it 1-avinn.
