Br Jack Stinnett Washington Just when Wash Ingtonians were convinced that the nation' capital wkj becom ing the world center of bedlam war broke loose. It caught thirty-odd thousands of official and unofficial Wash ington at their favorite Sunday pastime, watching a "pro" foot ball game. The news, ten min utes after it was flashed over the Associated Press wires, reached a group of F.B.I, officials. Stands Empty Within a few minutes the half was over and the stands were deserted by thousands as army, navy and other government of ficials rushed to report for duty. Overnight, the capital, which heretofore has seen uniforms on only the non-commissioned of ficers and men of the armed forces, took on the appearance of an armed camp as the thous ands of army and navy officers on desk duty here went into uni form. Only those who were here more than 20 years ago when the hordes working in Washing ton were ordered "out of uni form" have any basis for com parison of the warlike appear ance of the capital. The utter confusion of com mentators who for days had been predicting that nothing would happen In the Pacific was matched only by the surprise of those who had been saying that something would. So far a wartime personnel is concerned, Washington and the nation are far ahead of that spring In 1917. There are ap proximately a million persons In the District of Columbia and its suburbs, more than twice what it had 20 years ago before most of the World war expansion had been eliminated. There are near ly a quarter of a million per sons working for the govern ment here and throughout the country and foreign lands more than 800,000 additional. There are now about 2,000,000 per sons In the armed forces, anoth er million enrolled for civilian defense and that figure Is ex pected to double Immediately. Housing and office space here are at such a premium that the stories of overcrowding and high rentals would fill a volume. On week-ends when soldiers from nearby camps and government employes are on the move, it Is Impossible to get within a block of Union station only a few years ago ridiculed for Its size as something to which the city could never grow up. It, It any wonder that Wash tngtonians are saying that the capital is far ahead, in bedlam, of what It was when World war 1 broke out? First Aid Training Is Offered Women; Mrs. Pena Director A maximum of 23 Medford women may participate In an American Red Cross first aid course feeing started January 6 under direction of Mrs. Marjorie Pena, It was announced today at the local Girl Scout office. Girl Scout leaders and others interested are urged to register for the training at the Scout office, 900 East Main street. "The course will continue each Tuesday and Thursday morning during January from 9 to noon. Assisting with the In struction will be Mrs. Roy Byrd, Mrs. C. M. S tames, and Miss Shirley Brunn, registered nurses," said Mrs. Pena today. The course, which Is under sponsorship of the Girl Scout council for this area, will be given without charge to those enrolling. A textbook Is needed and regular attendance Is re quired of those participating. Man ager Clyde Betts said the light ed hotel "stood like a beacon," and Its closure was military measure.
