H. Hedrlck. city school superintendent. There are na tional defense training classes here in welding and aviation sheet metal, the latter having provided more than 100 youths to the Boeing and Lockheed air craft companies. Mr. Ulrich said ha had been notified that the state employ ment service had been requested by Licut.-Col. E. V. Wootou, director of selective service In Oregon, not to certify any more 1-A registrants for defense train ing classes. Others, of course, will continue to be referred for this sort of training. TALKS TOO MUCH Columbus, Ohio, Dec. 1. W) A retiring army, officer was confined to his quarters today during an investigation into recent speeches in which he commented on the Japanese at tack on Hawaii. Major Gen. Daniel Van Voor- hls, fifth corps area commander, ordered the action, an area spokesman said, against Col. H, C. Kress Muhlenberg, former commander of Hickam Field in Hawaii. Colonel Muhlenberg told the Curtiss Flying club here Wed nesday night that the only rea son the United States did not lose the Hawaiian Islands In the initial attack by Japan was that the Japanese were too stupid to concentrate their forces. He also declared that the American people should not hunt "goats" because they them selves adopted a program of sending planes all over the world Instead of keeping air craft where most needed. Colonel Muhlenberg Is on leave pending retirement at his own request. He declined to comment on the army's Inquiry, SENATTAPlVES DEFENSE HOUSING Washington. Dec. 19.- The senate approved and sent to the White House a 8530.000, 000 appropriations bill contain ing $430,000,000 for defense housing and community facili ties as well as approximately $48,000,000 for relief and civil ian defense of tha Philippines. Included also was $35,000,000 to stock the Hawaiian Islands with food supplies and $13,000, 000 for civilian defense and relief work In Alaska, tha Vir gin islands and Puerto Rico. The bill would make $36. 808 000 In Philippine sugar taxes collected up to Septem ber 30, plus collections since that date, available along with $10,000,000 already sent to the island government by the presi dent, for defense and relief work there. SUPPLY OF $25 It seems as though the U. S. treasury department as well as the army and navy was caught by surprise in the Japanese at tack. Since war started there has been a veritable flood of defense bond buying until today there was not a $25 bond to be had lnMedfurd. Applications were being accepted with promise of delivery as soon as bonds could be received from the Federal Reserve bank, San Francisco, or postoffice headquarters, though the shortage was Indicated to be national. The postoffice. First Federal Savings and Loan association and the U. S. National bank were all out of $25 bonds. Most of them had higher denomina tions. thoiiKh In limited quanti ties.
