PAGE TEN MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1941. vmmmm STARTING CALL Webfoot Cage Mentor Has Only 3 Seniors on Squad Now Traveling In East. Br 0l FowUr Eugene. Ore., Dee. 19. AP) Coach Howard Hobson of the currently touring University of Oregon Webfoots, could floor tarting combination of letter- men but he isn't. ' The Oregon basketball mentor is concentrating chiefly on sopho mores and juniors this year, and his present traveling squad in cludes five sophs, three Juniors and only three seniors. Two of the seniors are guards and the other is Archie Marshik, the six-foot-seven center, who ap parently has lost the starting call to Sophomore Lloyd Jackson of Dallas, Ore., who matches Mar shik in inches and outshines him in ability, if not In experience. The senior guards are George "Porky" Andrews of Victoria, B. C, six-footer, and Paul Jackson of Oakland, Calif., who is no relation and a foot shorter than Center Lloyd Jackson. Nawland Is Guard Don Kirsch of Portland, a jun ior guard, qualifies for the Hob sor. fire department basket ball style by working for the Portland tire department in the summer. Sophomore Bob Mewland of Medford, a six-footer, and Wilson Maynard, 8-10V4, Salem, rounds out the guards. Bob Wren, sophomore from Portland, six-feet, one inch, ap pears to have clinched one of the forward spots. Six feet, three inch tall Rolph Fuhrman of Co quille, a Junior, is the other start ing forward. Backing them up ar Warren Taylor, six-five, jun ior from Banks, Ore., and War ren Christenson, six-three, Tilla mook soph. Whether the Webfoots do bet ter than a tie for third place where they ended with Washing ton last season depends on how the new men develop. So far the Oregon Invasion of the east can hardly be called howling success, although the Webfoots haven't taken any one tided lickings. They were nosed out by Wayne, Canlsius, Long Island V., and Duquesne. They've beaten Temple and Xavier. To morrow night they clash with De Paul university at the Chicago stadium. They open the north ern division chase at home against Idaho January 9-10. TO UTAH AGGIES Logan, Utah, Dec. IB. WV Grant Cullimore, Utah State ag ricultural school basketball re serve guard, was credited last night with stopping the early scoring spurt of Willamette uni versity and piling up enough points to clinch the game 38 31, for his team. The Oregonlans took an early lead and held until Cullimore was sent in. Captain Jim Rob ertson of Willamette tied with Cullimore for high scoring honors with 10 points each.
