Washington, Dec. 18, The United State entrusted supreme command of its Pacific fleet today to Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, one of the highest officers In the navy's top coun cils. Nimitz, a forceful Texan and proud of it, was ordered to sea from his post as chief of the bureau of naviation, where he was rated in service circles as second only to Admiral Harold R. Stark, chief of naval oper ations. Nimitz succeeds Admiral Hus band E. Kimmel, commander-in-chief of the Pacific fleet, who with two other top-ranking of ficers of the Hawaiian area was relieved of command, pending outcome of the investigation which President Roosevelt or dered on the Pearl Harbor sneak attack. The navy and war depart ments acted simultaneously last night In removing the officers whose responsibility for the lack of alert preparedness will be subject to examination by the president's Investigation board. Kimmel was the only navy man affected. The army re lieved Lieutenant General Wal ter C. Short of command of the Hawaiian military department, and Major General Frederick L. Martin of command of the lr forces in Hawaii. Lieutenant General Delos C. Emmons of the air combat force already has reached Honolulu and replaced Short General C. L. Tinker, of the air corps, is fi route to take over the air command. Washington, Dec. 18.- Winged Destruction Strikes Hickam Field A major object of the Japan bombing raid on Honolulu, Hickman field was Uttered with wreckage. This is one of the first pictures of the destruction released by the army and shows one of the damaged hangars. Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs, now on duty with the Atlantic fleet, was nominated by Presi dent Roosevelt today to be the new chief of the bureau of navi gation in the navy department here for a four-year term. He would succeed Rear Ad miral Chester W. Nimitz. SEVENBOYS DIE Robinson, 111., Dec. 18. W) At least seven youths perish ed last night in the burning wreckage of a national youth administration bus that ran off Illinois highway 1 and over turned near West Union. Two boys, Henry Walters and one named Johnson of Marshall, were unaccounted for early to day, and the bus driver, Ferris Williams, 35, of Casey, was hos pitalized for critical burns. The dead were Tom Ollinger, 17; Henry Ollinger, 18; James Holbeck, 15; Barney Shonk, 15; Richard McClure, 20; Earl Mel ton and Vic Turner. Turner was from Casey, the others from Marshall. T K.O. Dr. William F. Roney acted as Santa Claus and the members heaped up toys in his big sack to add to the Lady Lions-firemen's project. The toys will be distributed tomororw and Sat urday to the parents of children who otherwise would have no gifts for Christmas. The club was informed by Fire Chief Roy Elliott that the hundreds of toys rebuilt and repainted by the firemen in their own workshop, together with those contributed by the Lions, would be on display this afternoon and tonight at the Rogue River Chevrolet com pany s showroom at Ninth and Bartlett streets, the distributing center. The chief related that the firemen had contributed 1,000 man-hours of work to reconditioning the old, battered toys into new playthings. .The club voted to erect at least one shelter for the men who are on civilian defense duty at air raid spotting posts in the hills. Too Lat w Claulfj 13:30 p Dm Men Trunin, want ids Hockey Association Will Be Formed al Meeting Friday Night Teams for the Southern Ore gon Hockey association will be formed at the Medford Ice Arena at 6 p. m. tomorrow. It was announced today by Spar key Bourque, arena manager. All who have been practicing for hockey should be at the arena tomorrow evening, he said. As scan as the teams are or ganized, scrimmage play will begin, Borque stated. Hockey equipment is due to arrive here next week and Sparkey want? the teams in readiness to buckle down to real competitive play the minute the paraphernalia comes. Four teams are to be organized. Practice sessions have been held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 8 to 7 since the arena was opened November 8. "Now we are ready to get down to business." bparxey declared. Until baling facili ties can be developed, there Is no value In scrap paper such as envelopes, etc. The paper will be sold by the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and their junior organizations, the Cubs and Brownies, are scheduled to pitch into the na tional Job of salvaging waste pa per commencing locally on Jan uary 10 according to K. A. Wells, Boy Scout executive, and Marjole Pena, Girl Scout direc tor. Start of the campaign has been delayed due to the prob lem of shipping the paper out of the Medford area. Satisfac tory plans have now been com' pleted and householders are asked to conserve their paper preparatory to commencement of the campaign.
