TTHK objective is to black out quickly and to - black out COMPLETELY. Early efforts have left much to be desired, but there was general agree ment that people arc -learning rapidly. s THERE are problems. Among them so far lighted dairy barns and poultry houses have loomed rather large west of the mountains. Not that dairy men and poultrymen have been unwilling to co-operate. Far from it. - The prpblem la to GET WORD to the operators of such places. Tha Idea now la that they will have to be closed in so that the lights can burn without being seen, . S i THE real problem is the saw- mill trash-burner. No satis factory method of blacking out the trash-burner quickly has yet been devised. The problem has been to get out a warning that can be heard and understood by all. Thera la no flat and authori tative answer, but informed opinion holds that they may have been and MAY BE AGAIN at any moment. Slipping in an aircraft carrier and raiding Pacific coast cities, he , says, would appeal strongly to the Japanese. We must be prepared lor any thing. - TiERE have been rumors of evacuation of Pacific coast cities and towns. NONE have been ordered, But again no one knows when such thing may become neces sary. If these islands were only , for commercial use why was any attempt made to fortify them? At one time, muste was my vocation and it is sun a much loved avocation. For that reason I have been considering how I may use It for my coun try and the first service that occurs to me la to examine care fully what I believe to be a fallacy, the general opinion that our national anthem Is too dif ficult for the average person to sing. Lucy Monroe, for one, does not think so. Miss Monroe was made official soloist of the American Legion in 1037 and has sung 'The Star Spangled Banner" before thousands, as well as thousands of times. Of course, Miss Monroe is a highly trained vocalist but she gives soma suggestions for the aver age voice. The first thing we should do. she says, la to learn all the words accurately so that we grasp the entire meaning. With the worda firmly In mind. Miss Monroe says we can and will naturally find tha right places at which to breathe a fact that anyone can find out by experi menting. Many untrained sing ers try to sing the song all In one breath or in gasps, she says. She also advises that one should sing along in an even tone and not try to Interpret or empha size. If too many stresses are avoided It will be much simpler, she thinks. She sums up her case for tha "Banner" aa follows: "I believe it is as much a patriotic duty to know the national anthem aa It is to vote. And 'while we're singing It we may as well do a good Job of it and enjoy our selves. "The Star Spangled Banner" la a beautiful song, and I don't think, with all due re spect to the newer pieces, that anything can ever replace it as our national anthem.
