Joe DiMaggio Voted Outstanding Male Athlete of Current Year TED WILLIAMS OF RED SOX RANKED SECOND IN VOTE Joe Louis Scores Third Craig Wood Finishes 4th Footballers Lag Behind By Orle Robertson New York, Dec. 17 JP Tor breaking all major league con aecutive hitting records with string of 36 straight games, Joe DiMaggio was voted the out standing male athlete of 1941 by a margin of more than 2 to 1 over his nearest rival. The slugging New York Yan kee outfielder, who batted .357, piled up a total of 157 points as 42 of the 82 sport experts par ticipating in the Associated Press' annual poll placed him first on their list. He was given either second or third place on 20 other ballots. , Ted Williams, who in hitting .408 for the Boston Red Sox be came the first major leaguer in many years to surpass the .400 mark, ran second to DiMaggio. Polling five first-place votes, Williams received a total of 74 on the basis of three points for first, two for second and one for third. Joe Louis, heavyweight box ing champion, outscored Willi ams In the number of first pla ces, receiving 10, but wound up third with 84 points for his un precedented performance of suc cessfully defending his title se ven times during the year. With Craig Wood, U. S. open golf king, finishing fourth with 27 votes, football was complete ly routed for the first time in three years. Tommy Harmon of Michigan won No. 1 honors last year and Niles Klnnlck of Iowa in 1939 but this year the grid iron sport could do no better than fifth with Don Hutson, the Green Bay Packer's great end. Golfer Bud Ward received five points. Five coaches, four of them gridiron mentors, received con sideration. They were Frank Leahy of Notre Dame, Earl Blaik of the army, Burt Shotton, leader of the Columbus Red birds of the American Baseball Association, Paul Brown of Ohio State and Bernle Blerman of Minnesota's unbeaten Gopher. Mulder scored 16 points. EX-PRINCETON COACH DIES IN FARM BLAZE Corvallis, Ore., Dec. 17 (IP) Arthur R. T. Hillebrand, who died In a farm home fire near here Sunday, was identified by members of the family today as football coach at Princeton from 1903 to 1005 and an all-America tackle there In 1898 and 1899. His brother. Homer Hille brand, Sr., who escaped with minor burns, also was a Prince ton athlete and later played baseball with the British Pirates. Portland Wheat "Blackoue' Baby Leaves For Home Medford's "blackout baby", Diana Rose Maddox and her mother, Mrs. Rupert Maddox. returned to their home on Griffin Creek today from Sac red Heart hospital. Diana Rose was born at the hospital last Friday morning at 4 30 o'clock and because blackout regulations were in order light was furnished by a flashlight. She weighed sev en pounds and 14 ounces and Is the only baby born at the hospital during "blackout' regulations to date the pressure at no time was comparable to that which weighed so heavily upon list In the early days of last week. IIP) The air ministry news service de clared today that the Japanese are using both Messerschmitt 109's and HO's German fighter planes in the air battle of Mal aya. ME-109 Is a single-englned plane and the ME-UO is the twin-engined. Both can be used as bombers. (JPt Mrs. Sally Sanders of Brooks yesterday was notified of the death at Pearl Harbor of her husband, Ensign Eugene T. San ders, 41, a veteran of the first world war. He was a native of Hubbard.
