DEFENSE SERVICES 'NOT ON ALERT' IS (Continued From Pag Oo) weapons, eight 5-inch anti-aircraft guns, and three aircraft. It cost $5,926,000 and was al tered at a cost of $7,000,000 to increase its armor. (The Cassin, Shaw and Downes were of the Mahan destroyer class, in the 1933 program. The Cassin and Shaw were both launched Oct. 28, 1935, at the Philadelphia navy yard. They were of 1,500 tons displacement and cost from $3,400,000 to $3,750,000 each. The Downes was launched at Norfolk navy yard April 2, 1936, and was similar to the other two.) No Planes In Air Knox said no army or navy planes were in the air when the attack came, although planes of the navy's customary dawn patrol already were over the horizon. The navy had not been pa trolling at night, Knox told a questioner, considering such pa trol would be ineffective. He said he believed 300 patrol planes would have had to be operating to entirely safeguard the islands from surprise attack. Army losses in aircraft were severe, Knox said, and some hangars also were destroyed. But he added that replacements had already arrived or were on their way. The Utah, the target ship lost, had not been used as a com batant ship for many years. It was subjected to a furious at tack because, Knox said, the Japanese thought they were knocking out an aircraft carrier. (The Utah was launched Dec. 23, 1909, at the New York Ship building 'company yards, and was a former battleship being used as a wireless controlled target ship. It had 19,800 tons displacement.) No Carrier In Port Actually, he said, no aircraft carrier was in Pearl Harbor at the time. The Arizona, he said, was destroyed by the explosion first of its boiler and then Jts forward magazine, as a result of a hit by a bomb which is believed to have literally passed down the smoke stack. The mine layer Oglala was a converted merchantman, for merly a passenger ship on the Fall River line which was con verted into a mine layer during the World war. She carried one 5-Inch gun, two 3-inch anti-aircraft guns and a complement of 373 men. Knox said some ships already had been repaired and were ready for sea. . Others, he explained, will take from a week to several months to repair. The Okla homa was placed In the cate gory requiring several months. Knox told a questioner that the Japanese planes which es caped "flew In four directions" to baffle pursuit Knox said he estimated that from three to four week at least would have been required to make preparations for the raid. He told an inquirer a rumor that the navy had been forewarned was untrue. O.5.C. Prof'g Son Killed In Action Corvallls, Dec. 15. (JC The navy department notified J. S.
