Singapore Drive Seen Jap Plan - News from London that the Nipponese troops are Infiltrat ing into northern Malaya, and that the British are retiring to prepared positions, gives further indication that the Japs are maneuvering into position for a possible drive against the great naval base of Singapore. Even if they find a grand of fensive against this powerful position Isn't feasible, they fig ure on establishing air-fields from which they can conduct bombing operations' against the British fleet at Singapore. One of the most vital ques tions In connection with the bat tle of the Pacific is whether Russia is going to declare war on Japan. Certainly one would expect the Bolshevists to join the allies in the fight, since the security of the Soviet union is so heavily Involved. Obviously the quicker Japan is knocked out the better it will be for Russia because of the conserva tion of American and British energy and resources. The entrance of the Musco vites into the war against Japan at this critical juncture might have a devastating effect on the island empire. As already point ed out in this column, the Red air fleet at Vladivostok is a mighty sword suspended over the heads of the uneasy Japs. All-out bombing raids against Japanese cities might be catas trophic for the Nipponese. Red Rejection Is Opportune The Soviet announcement that nazi peace overtures have been rejected, and that the Rus sians will stick by the allies, comes at an opportune mo ment. Only yesterday I was asked what might be the signif icance of the nazi withdrawal of warplanes from the Russian front, the German cessation of offensives, and Moscow's silence In the face of this. The inti mation in this query was, of part, for those readers who have followed this column will recall that from the start of the European war I repeatedly in sisted that despite the Russo German pact the two countries were headed for war. It now is clear that the Euro pean conflict will see the crush ing of either the Hitlerian re gime or the communistic re gime. Thomas Peter Brennan, SS-year-old clerk, was found guilty of second degree murder by a cir cuit court jury last night in the death of Alfred S. Cayo, iron worker. Gumm, S3, Hillsboro route 1, Coroner F. J. Sewell announced. AIR RAID ADVICE Salem, Dec. 12. (IP) Stat Superintendent of Public In struction Rex Putnam sent all schools today recommendations concerning air-raid drills, pro tection of children during air raids, and safety precautions. Jacksonville, Dec. 12 (Spl.) The Emergency Service corps of Jacksonville Troop 35 Explorer Scouts composed of boys from 16 to 24 years has been training as a first aid unit for several months to be ready to serve their community when needed. They have secured some equip ment and supplies but addition al equipment is badly needed to enable the corps to be fully effective for emergency service. A specially built first aid trailer unit is necessary to trans port supplies and equipment. Material and equipment for the trailer will cost $60. The trailer will be built by the manual training department in the high school. In addition to the trailer each member must be equipped with belt ax, sheath knife, first aid kit and sod cloth. The corps has sufficient money to pur chase the first aid kits and carrying cases. Under present conditions their services may be needed at any time and to avoid delay they are asking their friends and those who may wish to assist for dona tions to help them secure the additional equipment needed. Donations may be left with the Chamber of Commerce in Medford or with Mr. Wilson at the Nugget Cafe in Jacksonville. For the next two Saturdays the postoffice will remain open all day as on week days Instead of closing at noon. Postmaster Frank DeSouza announced to day. The extended Saturday hours are Intended to help take care of the Christmas mailing rush. As business increases, additional windows will be opened for stamps and parcel post, Mr. De Souza said. The postoffice here has no in formation regarding mail to the Pacific war area but it is assum ed that no mail is being sent to or from the theater of war, Mr. DeSouza said. As there is no in formation on this subject or on airmail schedules, the post master suggested that patrons would save time by not tele phoning the postoffice. The of fice has been swamped with telephone calls the past few days. Local airmail service depends on weather conditions and not alone on military necessities, Mr. DeSouza pointed out. Under present circumstances, iirival of planes is not known until the last minute, he added. He ex plained, however, that when planes are not operating airmail is forwarded by the first train to the nearest center where It can be dispatched by air. During blackout periods, the lobby of the postoffice will be locked and no one will be able to enter, Mr. DeSouza said.
