FIRST HALF LEVY : MEDFORD IS 28.9 The city of Medford combined tax levy, schools, city, state and county, totals 28.9 mills (or the first half of 1942. This is 19.3 mills leu than for the entire year of 1941 when it was 48.2 mills. The millage Is the lowest In the county, for incorporated towns, with the exception of Ashland, which tops the list with a total of 23.9 mills. Gold Hill has the highest millage with 46.8 mills, and Jacksonville is second with 41.3 mills for the half year. 1 Jacksonville also has a 17-mill bond levy and Central Point a 6.7 bond levy. AID CLASS ON DEFENSE LIST The Jackson County Council of Defense is organizing class to qualify instructors in Red Cross first aid work and those Interested were asked to apply In person at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce by Sat urday. The class is to be started early next week. , Only those who have regis tered for civilian defense will be enrolled in the instructors' course, Capt. S. M. Tuttle, coun cil chairman said. There is shortage of first aid Instructors In the county and at least 50 are wanted for the class, he stated. Three Army Fliers Killed In Smashup El Paso, Tex., Dec. 10. Wayne Lyman Morse, chair man of President Roosevelt's emergency fact-finding commis sion, announced the signing of agreement less than six hours after he Informed the company, upon authorization from the wnite Mouse, mat it must ac cept the recommendations of the commission for the wage hike. Earlier, the union announced a strike might be called to en force the wage demands. (IP) Four hundred state prison inmates that they "stand ready to serve our country in any and every way possible." Warden George Alexander said that nearly all of the other 600 prisoners would have signed if they had had an opportunity. Alexander said the prison, which has been blacked 'out Monday and Tuesday n.ghts would not continue to black out unless it is absolutely necessary. He said he feared the prisoners might riot during the darkness. The state hospital is being blacked out. "Children must have good lunches if they are expected to do their best work," Mrs. Keeney explained. "Sine many of the children leave home as early as 7 o'clock to reach school, they need better than the average lunch box meal at nocn. If possible, something hot should be provided to go with sandwiches and salads which children often bring to school." "Parent-Teacher organizations. Granges and other civic clubs have done a great deal toward supplying hot 1 u n c h s for rural and city school children in Jackson county. Where a hot dish cannot be prepared at school, these or ganizations have sponsored pro jects which provide children with thermos bottles. Recipes and suggestions for hot dishes are given mothers who prepare the hot dishes at home," Mrs. Keeney said. Wartime Basis for Hospital In Seattle Seattle, Dec. 10. (IP) Har borview (the King county) hos pital, which went on a wartime basis last night, today received several thousand identification tags to be used for air raid vic tims. The tags, of heavy manila paper, were equipped with long cords to be tied around the patient's arm or leg, when the patient is admitted. . Fifty emergency cots were set up in the big hospital, and it was blacked out save in the operating and delivery rooms which were heavily screened. FISH CROSSED UP Pratt, Kas. (JP) Guy Josse- rand says the Catfish at the Pratt fish hatchery have learn- ed to recognize the sound of the truck which brings their feed once a day. Whenever it drives up the fish swarm to the feeding spots. The other day Josserand said workmen swap ped trucks and not a fingerling was on hand when the feeder reached the banks of the ponds the fish failed to recognize the new truck. BAR JUVENILE Great Falls, Mont. VPh- Sheriff Andy Loberg Is opening a new night club and "bar" here for children only and selling only soft drinks. He proposed his project because, he said there were no public dance halls in Great Falls that "Juveniles might properly attend. BACK TO WAR Denver, Colo. (IP) The rails from some of the narrow gauge lines constructed In Colorado during the early mining boom came from England. Many of the lines now have been aband oned and the rails after all these years, are being shipped back to England for armaments. Dm Mmi msune not adt St.-Phone 3339 Jane Hooker Writes Original Drama for Radio Station KOAC Miss Jane Hooker, daughter of Mr. and Mr W. A. Hooker, of 19 North Peach street, is author of an original, ejjeri mental drama, "Father Forgive Them," to be presented by the University of Oregon Radio Workshop December 11 at 7:30 p. m. on station KOAC. The play, the first student-written production featured by the workshop, will follow the Christmas story as it occurs in the mind of a Jewish refugee on the streets of New York. Miss Hooker graduated from Medford high school in 1939 where she was active in speech and journalism. She was saluta torian of her graduating class and recipient of the S.A.R. citi zenship award. She is majoring in speech and radio at the uni versity. This is her first radio play to see production. FORTIFY MAGELLAN Santiago, Chile, Dec. 10 (IP) Foreign Minister Juan Ros settl announced early today that Argentina and Chile had agreed to fortify the Strait of Magellan, where German surface railders sheltered at times during the world war.
