PAGE FIVE Wedding Plans USE OF SEALS ON MAS Miss Bullis Cites Origin of Health Seals in Remind ing Public to Cooperate. Report of the Medford post office, revealing a great In crease this year in the load of early Christmas mail, brought a reminder yesterday from Miss Helen Bullis, Jackson county chairman of the seal sale to combat tuberculosis. The re minder was to Jackson county people, urging them to see that the heavy load of mail carries with it the healthful message of the Christmas seal. Its pres ence. Miss Bullis said, will not spell extra work for the postal clerks and every letter, which carries it, will represent one more penny spent in the cam paign to eradicate tuberculosis. The history of the Christmas deal. Miss Bullis pointed out, is so closely connected with mail and postal clerks that seal sale workers seldom think of letters without thinking of seals. In 1903 Einar Holboell, a postal clerk in Copenhagen, Denmark, in the rush of Christmas mail, thought how easily the rich and poor alike could build a hos pital for tuberculous .children ax caul aciici Laiiicu a email penny stamp of the season's greetings. His idea crystallized Into a plan, which was readily approved by the postal authori ties and sanctioned by the royal family. The next Christmas the Danish people built the hospital through the generous response to the first Christmas seal sale for philanthrophic purpose. The seal came to America on a letter to Jacob Riis of New York, author, reporter and a pioneer in the field of social service. He wrote an article on the subject. It was read by Miss Emily Bissell, who designed a Christmas seal and borrowed $40 to pay for printing 50,000 of them. The first Christmas seal sale in America opened on December 7, 1907. In 1908 it was general with 6000 newspa pers cooperating to tell the na tion what a weapon the penny seal could be in the fight against tuberculosis. The newspapers of the nation are still cooperating. The fact that the tuberculosis death rate among unskilled workers is seven times higher than that among professional w o r k e r s shows the value of that educa tional campaign. The unskilled workers do not read so much as the skilled. The San Francisco Chronicle said Miss Barbara B o w a (above), Honolulu. T. NATION-WIDE LICITY STUNT Craterian Manager to Spend Fortnight at Sun Valley With All Expenses Paid. Men of Saint Mark's To Honor Bishop at v Luncheon on Friday The men of Saint Mark's church and their friends will assemble for luncheon Friday at 12:05 p. m. at the Jackson hotel in honor of the Rt. Rev. Benjamin D. Dagwell, D.D.. Bishop of Oregon, who will be in attendance as guest and speaker. v Next Sunday at 8 p. m. Bishop Dagwell will preach at Saint Mark's church and confirm an adult group. Preceeding the service a dinner for the mem bers of the church and all others in the community interested, will be held in the Parish house from 5 to 7:30 p. m. A cordial invitation is extended to all. Large Saving Cited In Higher Education Portland. Dec. 4. (P) R. L. Collins, budget officer, said yes terday the Oregon system of higher education saved $3,282, 605 in tax money in the eight years since unification com pared with the eight preceding years. Collins said the saving was made despite an enrollment in crease of 10 per cent. Entries Pouring in For Annual Turkey Exhibit al Oakland Roseburg, Ore., Dec. 4. (IP) Final preparations for opening of the 13th annual northwestern turkey show at Oakland,' Ore., December 9 were in progress today as entries were pouring in for the exhibit of live birds, in which divisions the total thus far is 438, Manager E. G. Young reported. Time for making res ervations for the show will ex pire the last of this week. The exhibit from the greatest distance so far registered con sists of a display of six stand ard bronze birds from the flock of Herbert .Brohman, Sanborn, N. D. Exhibitors from all parts of Oregon and western Washing ton also have filed entries. The list of exhibitors so far complet ed also includes a large number of Douglas county breeders who will offer entries for the first time. Young advises. The show, opening Tuesday next, will continue through Sat urday, December 13. "It Happened In Sun Valley." That's the song Jack Matlack, manager of the Craterian the ater, was singing today. And it won't be long before it will be happening to Matlack in Sun Valley, America's newest sports center and vacationland In Idaho. Yes, Jack was one of five winners throughout the country in the 20th Century-Fox Film corporation's contest to publi cize its Sonja Henie picture "Sun Valley Serenade." Today Jack had a telegram in his pocket notifying him that he was one of the winners. The prize? A fortnight's, all-expense-paid vacation for two at Sun Valley. Jack thinks he'll take his vacation in February. Two thousand or more theater managers all over the country participated in the promotional campaign. Matlack put on his show the night of October 29 when Sun Valley Serenade opened its run at the Craterian This Sonja Henie skating pic ture was tied in with the in augural of southern Oregon's 1941-42 winter sports season. the Rogue Snowmen sponsoring what turned out to be the most gala and glittering parade seen here in years. Stores made up special window displays for the winter sports season and clubs and commercial enterprises en tered many floats in the parade to carry out Matlack's central theme. There were other feat ures, too. One of Medford's largest throngs jammed the downtown district and swarmed to the Craterian theater after the par ade. Biggest contest of Its kind held by the motion picture in dustry in years, the competition was open to any theater man ager showing "Sun Valley Ser enade" between August 29 and November 15. Judges were edi tors and publishers of various trade, motion picture and the ater magazines. Applegate Unit Hears Mrs. Sager, Leader in Home Demonstration State home demonstration agent leader, Mrs. Azalea Sager, spent Wednesday in Jackson county, coming to Medford for the purpose of leading a dis cussion on citizenship at the Applegate extension unit meet ing, according to Miss Marian J. Farrell, home demonstration agent. The discussion revolved around the topic "Keeping Our Balance in a World of Propa ganda." This was the first of a series of such meetings to be conducted by the O.S.C. exten sion service throughout all home economics extension units during January and February. "Women all over the county realize more fully each day that it is their responsibility to think clearly and to help all members of their family to do likewise if 'we are to maintain our free dom," Miss Farrell declared. (U.R) Ted Bellak, director of Minnesota's glider training program, pre dicts that the army and navy soon will use gliders towed be hind troop transport planes to haul military equipment. Bellak. who holds the world's cross-water glider flight record, believes the use of gliders by the German luftwaffe in the Crete campaign last spring has opened new fields for gliders and sailplanes by the nation's armed forces. Bellak was appointed recently as directory of the first state glider training program in the nation. The necessity of training thousands of pilots, Bellak said, has stimulated interest in glider training. "Russia's great showing against a superior German air force is largely due to extensive train ing with gliders and other mo tionless aircraft," he said. "I've found that virtually all of the boys I have trained in glider and sail plane flying have gone on to become regular pilots. And they find the early training invaluable in power flying " The army and navy, he said, have ordered several 10-passen-ger sailplanes constructed as a result of the success the German air force has obtained in trans porting parachute troops and light artillery.
