JACKSONVILLE BOY ESCAPES DEATH IN 1 W CRASH James Eaton Home on Fur lough After Experiencing 500-Foot Plunge to Earth Instead of "going to hell", James Eaton of Jacksonville got a 30-day furlough and came horn for visit. Young Eaton, who arrived her this morning, turvived a plan crash that Instantly killed the pilot, a Lieut. Bright, near Lerdo field, Cal., October 12. The two air corps men, after .flying in formation In practice drill for about 48 minutes, wcr coming down from 15,000 feet for a landing.- At 600 feet something broke and Bright couldn't level off. The plane continued it breakneck descent, pointed nos downward. Seeing what was happening, Eaton grabbed the radio microphone and shouted into Brighfs ear: "Here we go to hell." Bright was too busy trying to pull the plan out to reply. Neither was there time. "The earth cam up mighty fast," Eaton said today. Thrown From Plan The plan hit with tremend ous fore and Bright went through the dash board. Miracu lously Eaton was thrown clear, being torn out of his safety belt. He didn't know anything for two or three hours. When he wok up he discovered he had only a broken left ankle and an upper lip cut that required 14 stitches to close. Eaton is the son of Mrs. F. Eaton, former Jacksonville resi dent now living in Portland, and brother of Mrs. Ruth Kent of Jacksonville. After a visit with his sister, Eaton plans to continue to Portland to see his mother. Otoelns Urn Cur Claelfu Me a. m Too Uto to Claetirt DM ) E ACCEPTS BID TO ROSE FESTIVAL The Jackson County Sheriffs Poss has accepted the invita tion of the Portland Rose Festi val association to appear at the Ros Festival celebration next June. At least 24 members of the posse, with their mounts, will make the trip, it was an nounced today. Besides appear ing in the Rose Festival parade, the posse will enter the eompetj. tiv drill against at least five other posses of Oregon. The poss will appear each evening at the Multnomah stadium dur ing the Ros Festival celebra tion. The Ros Festival associa tion has appropriated $2000 for prizes for the competitive drill. The Sheriff Pots la now completing it first aid course, with all members qualifying. The poss is registered under the national defense and will soon receive lu national defense insignia, being attached to the police section. The poss had been urged by many local groups and organiza tion to participate in the Rose Festival celebration and repre sent southern Oregon. Dr. C. I.
