Hilkey, Miss Luvene Hilkey. Miss Coral Hil- key, Mrs. Alice McVay and Mrs. Leonard Freeman, all of Central Point; Mrs R. F. Lew-man of Williams; Mrs Howard Bither of Lone Pine: and Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Baker of Gold Hill. Mother Dies Mrs. Frank Ovel nian of the Jacksonville high way received word Tuesday of the death of her mother, Mrs. Rebecca Gage of Kalispell, Mont. Mrs. Gage was 83 years of age. Funeral services were held yesterday in Kalispell Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ovelman, Mrs. J. J. Duffy and Mrs. Chris Lauman. and . two sons, Percy and Winnie S) Gage, the latter four of Kalis pell. Minor Accidents Donald A. Thomson, Medford, and Eugene Sauer, 503 Hamilton street, drove cars Involved in a (light mishap at Central avenue and Jackson boulevard this morning, a report on file said. Dr. James C. Hayes of 83S East Main street and Robert D. Hollenbeck of 722 North Riverside avenue were drivers of cars Involved in a minor accident at Main and Front streets last night, according to a report on file today. Still Warmer For the third consecutive day it was warmer today at mile-and-a-half high Crater Lake national park than in the Rogue River valley. The minimum temperature in the park during the night was 31 A degrees as compared with 24 here. Maximum at the lake yesterday was 57 degrees as compared with 49 here. Snow in the park has been virtually all melted. It was reported by tnort-wave radio. The weather continues clear and the lake was calm and particularly beau tiful yesterday, the broadcaster said. Park roads were still icy In spots morning and evening and motorists were counseled to be cautious. Plane Passengers The 5:45 o'clock northbound United Main liner last evening returned to Medford after reaching Eugene because of fog In the north and its passengers spent the night here. The plane returned to Oakland. Cal., early last night with southbound mail. The 9:23 p. m. northbound plane was Q grounded here all night because w of fog in the north. Passengers from both northbound planes continued to Portland and Se attle at 11:40 this morning. Arriving last night from Los Angeles was E. P. Ivory. L. E. Stanton departed for Portland. Stanton arrived earlier last night from Portland. J. A. Callahan departed for San Francisco. Mr. and Mrs. F. K. Brunton arrived last evening from San Francisco. C. A. Arrasmith arrived yester day afternoon from Portland on a special plane stop. Leaving for Oakland were Miss L. Cur tlss and W. G. Hulbert. Arriv ing yesterday noon were A. BUTLER E LAKE ADVENTURE Medford Pair Find Autoisft Marooned in Diamond Lake Vicinity in Icy Night If it hadnt been for the ad venturous spirit of Moore Ham ilton and Arnel Butler, Medford sportsmen, an elderly woman and her daughter might have suffered seriously from mis hap that marooned them in their car and trailer on the last long hill of the Diamond Lake high way this side of Diamond lake, a desolate and seldom-used highway this time of year. Enchanted by distance, the intrepid Hamilton and Butler started out last evening to have a whirl on the skates at Diam ond lake, 80 miles from here. They found the Diamond Lake highway free of snow but icy all the way from Mulr creek to the summit. On the last long hill before reaching Diamond lake, the Medford men came upon the two helpless women, who were returning to their homes, situat ed the other side of The Dalles California highway. Going up the hill, the car and trailer skid ded on tha icy pavement and swung around to straddle the road. Faced Cold Night Without chains, the wheels could not get traction enough to move the car and trailer and the women exhausted the battery trying to get the motor going after it had stalled. When the adventurous Medford men reached the scene, there sat the two women, forlorn and help less, facing a cold, bleak night on the highway. The men used their own tire chains to get the women's car and trailer swung around and up over the hill. Then the women proceeded on their way. "We felt like good Boy Scouts," commented Hamilton when pressed by a reporter for details of the adventure. Two ponds at the south end of Diamond lake were found frozen and the men skated on them, though the surface was described as somewhat rough. The lake Itself was not frozen, though Hamilton said the tem perature was exceedingly cold at the lake. Ground at the lake was covered with four Inches of snow and snow was piled along the highway from the summit. While the highway itself was free of snow, it was so icy that no one should attempt to drive over it without chains, Hamilton counseled. f OSIERS SEEK Miss Lillian Roberts, execu tive secretary of the Jackson County Red Cross office, an nounced today that she had re ceived a report that a woman is unlawfully soliciting for Red Cross in Corvallls and Grants Pass. In order that Jackson county residents may not be deceived by such solicitors Miss Roberts asks that people not donate to someone not known In their communities. Those who wish to Join the American Red Cross may leave or send their dona- I tions to the local Red Cross of- flee. The local Red Cross roll call campaign closes In Jackson i county today. Zane Grey Drama at Rialto ' L ftlVwe3L?.C Portraying the most fighting man In all Zane Grey's gallery of Western heroes, George Montgomery is starred In the fast moving, red-blooded story of the Texas frontier, "Last of the Duanes", which opens a three day run today at the Rialto theatre. Set In the lawless Pecos coun Santa Claus had attracted every one from the spot where they were to give a concert. The band then took up its posi tion and played until it was time to go to the railroad sta tion to Join in the send-off for the high school football team leaving on the 7:50 train for The Dalles. What happened to Santa and the band only Illustrated the size of the huge crowd and the gayety of the occasion. During the hour-and-a-half celebration the spectators circulated around the business district to see the sights, and there were lots of things to see. Foremost attrac tion was the feature of live models in many of the store windows, a n innovation in Christmas opening celebrations. Many remarks were heard about the charm and prettiness of the models and the attractive way in which they demonstrated their merchandise. Displays Faature The display of 1942 motor cars and automotive farm equip ment also was an important feature. Many spectators were attracted by the marionette show staged in one of the store windows by two boys, Billy Patton and Earl Bradfish, Jr. The street decorations, more extensive this year than ever before, came In for a lot of favorable comment But for hundreds of little children the greatest thrill of all was shaking the big, friend ly hand of Santa Claus himselfl Death Takes Mother Of Film Actor Cooper West Los Angeles. Calif., Nov. 27 (JP) Mrs. Mabel Cooper Blgelow, 38, mother of Screen Actor Jackie Cooper, died today after a lingering illness. Years ago, Mrs. Blgelow toured the vaudeville circuits with her first husband, John Cooper, who was Jackie's father. She was playing a piano in a movie studio for rehearsals when she arranegd Jackie's first job In pictures. Secret Navy Weapon Brings Need of Men With Radio Training Washington, Nov. 27 (IP) Existence of a secret navy weap on for use In detecting both ships and airplanes at great dis tances was disclosed in authori tative quarters today as the navy department called for in creased enlistments for training in radio maintenance. j The device has been in use for some time, according to the best available information, but has been a carefully guarded secret. Word of its existence leaked out in connection with the campaign of recruiting radio technicians, but even so navy officials declined all official dis cussion of it TO Redding. Calif., Nov. 27 (IP) A shutdown of operationa at Shasta dam was averted today with the return of 60 sand and gravel workers whose spokes man had protested what he termed unsafe operating condi tions. The workers members of the AFL Engineers and Operators union employed by the Colum bia Construction company's sand and gravel plant, returned to work last night. A. E. Hester, business agent of the operating engineers, said AFL International union offi cials had ordered the local union to send its men back to the Job. Lassen County May Join Secessionists In North California Susanvllle, Calif., Nov. 27. (JP) A secession movement be gun recently by Curry county, Ore., and taken up by Siskiyou. Del Norte, and Modoc counties in California threatened to spread to a fourth discontented California county today. George McDow, secretary of the Susanvllle Chamber of Com merce, said that he spoke for many Lassen county business men In saying that Lassen coun ty is not receiving the proper amount of attention from Cali fornia.
