New York, Nov. 27 (JP) Two amateur tennis thrones of the United States stood empty today after the BDdication of both the outdoor and Indoor rulers to search for the gold that lies In the trail of the touring professionals. National Outdoor Champion Bobby Riggs and Frank Kovacs, the court Jester who wore the Indoor crown, switched from amateurs to pros less than 24 hours after Kovacs was suspend ed on charge of trying to mix the two. Now the United States Lawn Tennis association, which ac cused Kovacs of having more than one tennis racket, faces 1942 with the problem of stag ing both Its major amateur tour naments without a defending champion in the men's division. U.S.L.T.A. Won't Talk No on could be found among th officials of tha U.S.L.T.A. who wanted to discuss the situa tion today, but Riggs and Ko vacs had their say from oppo site sides of the country. Riggs, who signed his profes sional contract here, was asked what he thought the reaction of th U.S.L.T.A. would be. 'They probably will feel that it's a good riddance," said Riggs, "they're getting rid of a couple of headaches." At his home in Oakland, Cel., Kovacs predicted that amateur tennis would be "all washed up," and added, "without me, they won't have any gat attrac tion." "I was sick and tired of tak ing orders from the brass hats," said Frank, never one to, be bashful. "They'll have to get off the gravy train now." Actually, Kovacs said, he came out $2.33 in the hole on his expenses this year. Kovacs and Riggs signed con tracts with Alexis Thompson, owner of tha Philadelphia pro fessional football club, for a series of matches with Fred Perry and Don Budge, who Joined the pro ranks several years ago. WOMAN TUMBLES FROM LOW FLYING AIRPLANE Nome, Alaska. Nov. 27. Pi Mrs. Don Emmons is in a criti cal condition in a hospital at Kotzebue after surviving a plunge from her husband's low- flying airmail plane near the Arctic circle. Information received here said Mrs. Emmons hurtled from the piane when it was flying .bout 20 feet above the ground about 90 miles an hour and received kg and arm fractures and a concussion. The Phillies picked genial old John Bernard (Hans) Lobert yesterday to run their ball club less than 24 hours after the Cleveland Indians named Lou Boudreau, who was not bom until 14 years after Lobert made his major league debut with Pittsburgh. The selection of Lobert was no surprise to anyone because he ran the National league's rear guard for a few weeks last season while Doc Prothro was out beating the bushes for tal ent and during those weeks the Phillies played their best ball. The 48-year-old former man ager of the Philadelphia Phillies announced last night that he had acquired a financial inter est in the club and would be vice president. "I'm leaving the Philadelphia club with all good wishes to Gerry Nugent," said Prothro, who succeeds J. Harry (Truck) Hannah at the helm of the Chicks. (JP) Moffett field's army football eleven scored as many points in the first period as San Jose State could gather altogether, and so defeated the Spartans, 22-13, last night to give Coach Ken Winkelman a victory over himself. Each year midshipman cadet regiments wager bathrobes, sweaters, cuff links and even full dress uniforms on the out come of the Army-Navy pigskin feud. And Saturday'! Philadel phia classic Is no exception. Tradition dictates an even bet, regardless of the strength of either football clan. Navy is fa vored to take the colorful 42nd service clash and the middies claim that Is why they're having difficulty getting the bets cov ered. So they're using the old army game. To get wageri accepted, the sailors are telling the West Pointers to "put up or shut up." And you don't know your cadets if you think they won't take a dare. That's exactly how the mid dies figure the graylegs will re act. The middies have don a good job of accumulating army'a gray bathrobes and black sweat ers, with Navy gaining 10-0 and 14-0 victories the past two years. The entire regiment of more than 3,000 blue-uniformed mid shipmen will witness the game, parading in Philadelphia munic ipal stadium at 12:15 p. m. be hind a 75-plece band.
