Mann of Mann' Auto Service, quoted at the weekly dinner-meeting of the Lions club In the Hotel Medford last night as he spoke of procuring small contracts for national defense work. A member of the Lions 'club, Mr. Mann said he responded to a call from the government to visit the Red, White and Blue train in Portland Monday to see the exhibit of defense articles and parts that could be pro duced by small concerns. Ho stated that he saw many parts that could be assembled in his own auto body and trailer man ufacturing shop and some units that could be entirely assembled there. Saying' that he had expected to come home to Medford wltn his pockets bulging with orders. Mr. Mann was Informed by the government men on the display train that the agency in charge of the exhibit was not the one awarding contracts and that' to be considered for a contract one would have to file applications through various bureaus In Washington, D. C' When Mr. Mann questioned the government officials on the train on the value of his trip to Portland he inferred from the replies that to procure eon tracts concerted action would have to be taken by groups In Medford to create enough pub licity and pressure to gain rec ognition of the need for defense work in this community As an example of this round-about procedure, Mr. Mann said he was cited the case of a small Ohio town that recently snatch ed a contract from a Portland concern, the low bidder, because Its business interests showed Im pending suffering for Its citizens if its plants were forced into idleness because of defense work done elsewhere. Mr. Mann said it would not be difficult for Medford busi ness men to compile statistics showing how many machinists, metal workers, and other skilled mechanics and apprentices had been diverted from local chan nels to designated defense areas. This list, Mr. Mann said, would offer a strong argument for the placing of defense orders here. Eston Humphrey, club presi dent, announced that a Christ mas party was being planned for December 17. Meetings on December 24 and 31, he said, would be at the lunch hour Instead of the customary din ner hour. DOGS KILL SHEEP SHERIFF IS TOLD The sheriffs office reports re ceipt of complaints about dep redations of sheep killing dogs. A dog got into the D. H. Mc Carthy flock near Central Point recently and in escaping was caught in the fence and killed. He was a homeless shepherd dog. A dog also killed three sheep belonging to Herman Offenbach el of the Applegate last week and escaped in the darkness. Deputy Sheriff Grenbemer re ports these are the first com plaints of the year along these lines. He blames the sheep kill ing on hungry dogs. EAGLES OFFICERS AT MEET TONIGHT Crater Lake Aerie No. 2093, Fraternal Order of the Eagles. will meet tonight at 7:30 p. m. in Eagles hall. Special guests will be Arron Reece, supervisor and representative of the Grand Aerie of Eugene: D. D. Gilles pie, district director No. 2, of southern Oregon from ' Rose- burg. RUCH RANCHER FINDS SEPTEMBER 'SKY BOX' Big Applegate, Nov. 27. (Spl.) Ed Smith, farmer of the Ruch district, reports finding a "sky-box," which was sent aloft by the Medford weather bureau September 28th. The instru ment, like others sent at inter vals to determine atmospheric conditions, was found on Baker (,'ulch near Mr. Smith's home. He reports that the parachute previously attached to the box was lodged in a tree, and that he was unable to extricate it. MO SANTA Portland, Nov. 27. UP) The J. W. Herns family listened to the noise in the chimney an! thought Santa Claus was stag ing a pre-Christmas rehearsal. But there was no Santa. Amid soot and loud noise, two wood peckers swept ' from the fire place into the room. It took a policeman to oust them. Morris, 111., Nov. 27. UP) The wattle is Uu national flower Newman Olson, 21, and Russell ; of Australia. T The $21,000 damage suit of Waldo Green against H. L. Ad ams of Puyallup, Wash., under way before a circuit court jury since Tuesday, was expected to be in the hands of the jury late today or tomorrow morn ing. Green was called to the stand yesterday, and his cross examination was underway to day. The suit is based upon an ac cident in the Siskiyous more than a year ago, wherein Green, riding a motorcycle struck the rear of a parked car, and was injured. The defense is con tributory negligence. The plain tiff alleges Adams was negligent in operation of his auto. SUSPENDS STAR Portland, Nov. 27. UP) Ore gon's most unique newspaper, the monthly mimeographed Val setz Star, will suspend next month, its celebrated editor, Dorothy Ann Hobson, an nounced today in her Novem ber issue. The paper, which has the White House among its sub scribers, did not disclose the reason for the suspension but elsewhere it was pointed out that the editor is now attending school in Salem and the diffi culty of editing a paper in Val setz is increasing. Catfish Darby Films Shown 20-30 Club in Hotel Jackson Meet Moving pictures of the annual Catfish Derby, sponsored last spring by the Medford 20-30 club, were shown by Tony Manno at Tuesday night's reg ular meeting of the club In Ho tel Jackajn. Presiding at the meeting was Merritt Hittle, who plans to leave Medford this week-end to accept a position in Los Angeles with the Pacific Fruit and Pro duce company. Mr. Hittle, pass ing the 20-30 club age limit. was accepted into the past act ives by Carl Norris, Sid Reaney and Wes Coleman, his past act ive card being awarded by Mr. Reaney. Hal Treat, Quade Minnick and Homer Burton, all of the Yreka, Cal., 20-30 club, attend ed the meeting and invited lo cal 20-30ians and their friends to attend a smoker in Yreka December 10.
