Ntw Residence Belva Aiken applied at the city building in spector's office yesterday for a permit to construct a new resi dence and private garage at 816 West Fourth street at a stated cost of $3,500. C. C. Furnas of tl Rose avenue applied for a permit to remodel an attic and repair a floor at a stated cost of S200. Planning Party The annual American Legion and auxiliary Christmas party will be planned at the meeting of Medford post fn the armory at 8 tonight. H. O. Purucker. general chairman, will give a comprehensive report on the Armistice celebration. Ernest W. Winkle, post com mander, issued a special invita tion to visiting Legionnaires to attend the meeting. New Garb The 72 enrollees who arrived here from Louisiana last Saturday as replacements for Camp South Fork were equipped with the new CCC spruce green uniforms, including the rakish caps that are similar to those worn by air corps men. The spruce green uniform has been made standard for the civilian conservation corps but it has not been distributed to west coast enrollees yet. The new South Fork enrollees speak the French of Louisiana as well as, English. Hargis arrived from Oakland, Cal., yesterday noon. Leads The Portland navy re cruiting district led the nation In enlistments on a population basis last month, Jack M. Car penter, recruiter here was noti fied today. The Portland dis trict, which embraces all of Ore gon and small parts of Washing ton and Idaho, enlisted 233 men from 468 applicants last month, or 18 men per 100.000 popula tion Carpenter's record was above the state average. His territory, Jackson and Josephine counties, provided 10 recruits for the month or 19 2 per 100, 000 population. For the year l'ortland district stands second In enlistments but expects to step out in front as the full ef fect of the navy's recent adver tising campaign in Oregon news papers attains Its full effect. Thus far this month .Carpenter has enlisted 22 men from the Medford area. Last year the Portland district led the nation In recruiting. -tl.. Todd, 31, of 1208 Withington street was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail in Justice of the peace court this morning on a charge of wilfully destroying i.rivate property. Police said he threw dishes, broke windows and scattered groceries in his home last night after he had been drinking. T0RPED01NGS CUT Washington, Nov. 26 iP) Secretary of Navy Knox said today that the torpedoing of the U. S. destroyers Kearny and P.cuben James with a total loss of 112 men had caused a decline of 15 per cent in the rate of navy enlistments. The decline set in with the Keai-ny incident October 17 and was speeded up by the torpedo sinking of the Reuben James October 31, but Knox said that there was now a tendency toward returning to the old level of recruiting 10,000 to 11.000 men per month. That rate is still about 2,000 to 3,000 mea a month short of the navy's actual needs. Rear Admiral C. W. Nimitz, chief of the navy's bureau of navigation, explained at Knox's press conference, and Kr.ox declared It was possible that at some future date the ravj might have to use selectees whom, so far, it has declined to add to its volunteer service. LUMBER PRIORITY Portland, Ore., Nov. 26. UP) Oregon sought collaboration with Washington yesterday in surveying the effect of priority regulations on the' lumber In dustry. Ed Davis, of the Washington j department of conservation and development, who met with a committee appointed by Oregon Governor Charles A. Sprague, will discuss the proposed survey with Washington Governor Ar thur B. Langlie. The priority orders have re duced the lumber market and threaten a shutdown In numer ous mills, lumbermen have told the committee. 2,149 F 10 AID DEFENSE With only a few scattering re-1 porta to be made, 2,149 signa tures have been obtained for compliance with the farm de fense program of the depart ment of agriculture, the county agent's office reports. It is ex pected the final total will be close to 2.200. The solicitation was done by district supervisors of the county AAA. The farmers pledge to raise more hogs, hens, eggs, beef cat tle, and vegetables under the slogan "Food will win the war.' CCC CAMP FOLDS Heppner, Ore., Nov. 26. M") CCC Camp Heppner is fold ing Its tent and silently stealing away. Everything at the camp it packed for moving and for several months only 28 men have been stationed here. The camp performed considerable soil conservation, dam and bridge building work in Mor row county.
