Cal. (Spl) Pur chase of canned fruit for feed ing the army during the cur rent fiscal year ending next June 30 exceed 2523 carloads. This roughly figures at 90 train loads of 30 cars each. These figures were announced by Col. F. J. Riley, quartermas ter supply officer for the San Francisco general depot at Fort Mason and central procurement agent for seven items of can ned fruit for the entire army. Non-p erlshable subsistence which the quartermaster supply officer procures for the army Includes canned apricots, cher ries, figs, peaches, pears, pine apple, both sliced and crushed, and canned dried prunes. Ho also purchases canned salmon and canned tuna fish for the entire army but these seafoods are not included in the SO train loads. Peaches are the largest Item of canned fruit bought for the army and pineapple ranks sec ond according to volume. The total of contracts let for can ned peaches to feed the soldiers this year is 350 carloads of No. 10 (1-gal. size) cans and 450 carloads of No. 2Vj (l-qt. size) cans. This total of 800 cars would make 16 train loads of 50 cars each. LOST AND FOUND Orleans, France VP) Not everybody was the loser In the great panic which accompanied France's defeat in 1940. Some people were finders. The latest story is about 218 pearls of great price In search of their owner. They were found In a swamp near the village of Oison, where a farmer some time before came upon a case containing three million francs' worth of Jewelry while tilling his field.
