There are hundreds of na tional defense articles and parts that can be produced In Jack son county, Frank Hull, man ager of the Jarkson County Chamber of Commerce, said to day upon his return by train from Portland where yesterday he and others from here Inspect ed the exhibits on the govern ment's Red, White and Blue train. No contracts or sub-contracts were procured, however, as small concerns capable of as sisting In the defense produc tion program must still unwind maze of red tape in order to get to the point where they can even talk business. The proced ure to go through to apply for small contracts was explained and numerous blank forms were available. Explanation of de fense needs was given by gov ernment engineers on the Red, White and Blue train which is displaying throughout the na tion the articles and parts that can be turned out in small shops. To Address Bankers Mr. Hull will address a meet ing of the Southern Oregon Banking association in Grants Pass at a dinner-meeting at 6:30 tonight on defense articles that can be manufactured here. He will speak also on defense sav ings bonds and stamps. Other Jackson county men who inspected the Red, White and Blue train display were Diamond Flynn, F. L. Fairfield, Ed Mann, Henry Padgham and Wallace Brill, all of Medford, and R. I. Flaherty, president of the Ashland Chamber of Com merce, Harry Morris and L. R. Coder, all of Ashland. Mr. Flynn is chairman of the Industries committee of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and has been work ing on defense contracts. Health Assn. Meeting To View Reproduction Of This Year's Seal A beautiful charcoal repro duction of the 1941 Christmas Seal, which will launch the thirty-fifth annual drive to combat tuberculosis, has been made by Mrs. Roy Hollister of Rogue River and will be on dis play Thursday afternoon at the bi-monthly meeting of the Jack son County Public Health asso ciation. The meeting of the Health association, which spon sors the Jackson county seal sale, will be held in the court house auditorium at 2 o'clock Just as letters go into the mail to carry thousands of seals into Jackson county homes, for the drive opens officially In this county Friday. Much of the Thursday after noon program will be devoted to the subject of tuberculosis with the showing of a film, entitled "One More to Conquer. Proposals for carrying U. S. mails on star rouies of Oregon from July 1, 1942, to June 30, 1948, will be received at the office of the second assistant postmaster general, postoffice department, Washington, D. C. until 4:30 p. m. January 27, a bulletin received here today said. In Jackson county there are seven star routes. Postmaster Frank DeSouza said. Contracts all expire at the same time, he added. Anyone interested in bidding may procure detailed information from postmasters. GOT BEALL'S CALF The mystery of who slew Vin ton Beall's three month old calf week ago, was solved yester day by the sheriff's office. The animal was butchered in Beall's barn, by two transients, and taken to the "jungles" near the stockyards, and shared with other travellers. The veal was stewed by the wayfnrcrs. Deputy Sheriff William Grcn bemer traced the calf to the "Jungles", where the hide and shank bones were found. Beall identified the hide. The calf thieves departed these parts after a full meal, on a northbound freight, according to the evidence collected. The Grange Phoenix Grange Phoenix grange will meet in regular session this evening and all ladies are reminded of the paper bag supper and are asked to bring enough lunch for two persons. PLYWOOD PLAN! IN EARLY TEST Work of installing the first . Unit of machinery in th-.- ply wood plant of the Timber Pro ducts company will be complrt- I ed and ready for a te.t run in a j couple of weeks. General Mana ger Floyd Hart said today. No I definite date has been set for starting the pla-it. but Mr. Hart thought it woi.ld be around the j first of the year. The plywood plant will be Gold Hill Grange Sixty-five patrons, families and prospective members en joyed a turkey dinner at the Gold Hill Grange hall Novem ber 20 preceding grange meet ing. Jesse Fish was appointed chairman of the agriculture committee for the 1942 year. The grange has purchased a first aid kit for use in cr.se of emergencies. Gold Hill grange third and fourth degree team ha'i been in vited to put on the degrees for Roxy Ann candidates. The trav eling agate was tar.en to Wimer, November 13 by Central Point grange and Wimer will bring the agate to Gold Hill December 4. The winning grange will be announced soon. It has taken the agate r.bout a year to make the trip to all Jackson county granges and has created much enthusiasm. It is expected that Joint In stal'ation of 1942 officers will be held at Central Point gym nasium December 28. ILLEGAL VENISON Eulas E. Draper, Virgil C. Draper, and James J. Emmons, all of the Butte Falls district, charged with unlawful posses sion of venison during a closed season were each fined $25 and costs in Justice court yesterday. All entered pleas of guilty. The complaints were filed by state police game department officers. John E. Gassier, charged with hunting birds during a closed season was fined $25 and costs, John R. Wiles charged with hunting without license was assessed the same amounts. Herbert Beall Strang, who plead guilty to using prohibited hunting methods, was granted a 90 days suspended sentence. Strang was charged with hunt ing with a shotgun with an un locked magazine. Sam Van Dyke, recently dis charged soldier, charged with driving an auto while under the Influence of intoxicating liquor was assessed $30 and costs. On a companion charge of failure to stop at the scene of an ac cident, he was given a 90 days suspended sentence. Van Dyke drove into a state police car oc cupied by a state trooper and a city policeman, while parked on Front street early last Thurs day morning. Miss Lillian Roberts, executive sec retary of the Jackson County Red Cross, announced today, Douglas Taxpayers To Urge Grading of Tiller -Trail Road i Roseburg, Ore., Nov. 25. W) Directors of the Douglas. County Taxpayers league an- nounced today that an appeal will be made to the state high-! way commission for grading' and surfacing of four and one-1 half miles of the Tiller-Trail cut-off route in southern Doug las county. The road now is wide and well surfaced for its entire distance except for a short stretch south of Tiller and connecting with the Jackson county link, it is stated. As the road bears considerable logging traffic, immediate improvement is desired, the league directors state. BANKS FOR BONDS New York (JP) Banks which hold $10 in dimes and $8.75 in quarters are being offered for 10 cents at the 1100 odd branches of the Bundles for Britain in the U. S. and Amer ican possessions. The $18.75 saved will buy a United States defense bond, and the 10 cents, cost of the bank, will go to ward relief of British civilians. Yreka, Calif., Nov. 25 Secessionists of four dissatisfied California and Oregon border counties plan a tax-free govern ment for "Jefferson," their pro posed 49th state. Leaders of the "rebellion" de cided in a meeting at Yreka, provisional capital of the proj ected new commonwealth, that income, sales and liquor taxes would not be levied. Gilbert Gable of Curry coun ty, Ore., regarded by secession ists as their governor-to-be. said the new government would be financed solely from small roy alties on mining and timber developments. Citizens of "rebel" Siskiyou, Del Norte and Modoc counties of California and Curry of Ore gon want to secede from the two states so that their mineral and timber resources may be developed under their own gov ernment. Secessionists contend they have not received a "square deal" from California and Ore gon because the more populous counties get a major share of highway and other funds for public improvements. Two Trainmen Die In Wyoming Wreck Omaha, Nov. 25. OP) Two trainmen were killed and three injured in a freight train colli sion at Edson, Wyo , last night, the Union Pacific railroad an nounced today. Officials said a westbound freight hit another westbound train in the middle as It was pulling out of a switch onto the main line. Twenty-one cars and their contents were de stroyed by fire.
