W) The million and half dollar "Fourth Echelon" project which hai started to rise on the prairie near Fort Lewis portends to a great near future development of armored troops in the Pacific northwest. By "Fourth Echelon," the army means a department man ned by skilled mechanics and machinery large enough to han dle the heaviest repair work in army motorized equipment. When the project is finished, the army will be enabled to handle tank and half-track ve hicle repairs, assemble trucks and engine parts and conduct complete overhauls. Officers at Fort Lewis point out that present shops and equipment are sufficient to han dle the 7,000 trucks, 70 tanks and numerous reconnaissance cars now In operation on the post. The new project, conse quently, Is the harbinger of new forces. The "Fourth Echelon" group of buildings will Include a huge structure with floor spare of 500 by 300 feet. Another shop will measure 187 by 600 feet on the ground floor. LOCALS thern California districts will be represented. The 30 different kinds of seals, each picturing some form of danger or suggestion how to avoid an accident, have attract ed much attention. Accidents have been cut as much as 79 per cent In some places. The Veterans of Foreign Wars hope that Medfcrd will reap as much benefit by the Safety Seals. To Join Navy Four youths will leave by train tonight for Portlond to take their final qualifying physical examination for enlistment in the U. S. navy. Jack M. Carpenter, recruiter here, announced. They are Har ry Buckmaster, son of Mrs. Pauline Hampton of 847 West Second street, Joseph Smith, Mn of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith of Gold Hill, Robert Loucks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Loucks of Phoenix, and Aaron Lunberg, son of Mrs. Alice Campbell of Montague, Cat. Buckmaster and Smith seek minority enlistment, by which they would serve until they are 21, Lunberg applied for naval reserve enlistment, to remain In service for duration of the emergency, and Loucks registered for the regular navy slx-vear term. Carpenter said. Buckmaster has a brother In the navy, James, who enlisted last Febuary 18 and Is now on the battleship West Virginia. If the four youths pass their final medical tests, they will go im mediately to San Diego Cal., for six weeks of recruit train ing before being assigned to duty. Local Concern To F urnish P.O.
