To Vacation Herbert Heyde, clerk at the Rogue River na tional forest warehouse on Mc Andrews road will leave by car tomorrow to spend a week's vacation at the home of his parents in Portland. Back From North Mayor H. S. Deuel and Glenn L. Jackson, president of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, returned by United Mainliner last night from Portland where they con ferred with air corps officers regarding Medford municipal airport. Snow At Park Snow started falling In Crater Lake national park at 6 a. m. today and by the time of the morning short wave radio broadcast at 8:45 three inches had fallen. The snow closed the east entrance to the park. The north entrance, leading to Diamond lake, had previously been closed. On AAA Business G. W. Derr, Portland, sales manager of the Oregon State Motor asso ciation, transacted business here today. The association is an affiliate of the AAA. Mr. Derr arrived last night by car and planned to continue to Klamath Falls as soon as he completed his business here. Leaves for South Seely Hall, Jr., left by United Mainliner last evening for San Francisco. He plans to spend Thanksgiving vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Seely Hall, Sr., at San Carlos. Seely attends school in Medford, living with his grand mother, Mrs. Court Hall, 315 South Central avenue. New Residence A. L. Mc- Henry applied at the city build ing inspector's office yesterday for a permit to construct a new residence and private garage at 121 Willamette avenue at a stated cost of S2.500. Harry Hawk of 1111 West 10th street applied for a permit to make an addition to his garage at a stated cost of $150. Hold Dedication Forty cubs attended the Cub Pack 8 loyalty dedication Wednesday evening at Washington school. The Cub commissioner, Ray Harrison, was in charge of the dedication which was attended by many parents and friends. Dick Run yard received his Lion badge and Cub graduation certificate. A patriotic quiz program was conducted with Freddy Bying ton winning a scout knife. Refreshments were served at the close of the program. 1 !rw- B ! Fined 125 Tom Smith, 50, of Gold Hill was fined $25 and his driver's license was revoked, for 90 days in city police court yes . terday afternoon on a charge of I reckless driving. Smith's car, j police charged, struck a machine j operated by Walter Fredericks lot San Francisco at Main street ! and Riverside avenue Wednes day night. To Banquet H. C. Obye, as sistant supervisor of the Rogue River national forest, and Sam Warg, assistant ranger of the Union Creek district, will leave tomorrow for Bend to attend a testimonial dinner for W. O. Harriman who is retiring as I supervisor of the Fremont na tional forest. Forest officers of the entire northwest region will attend. Mr. Obye and Mr. Warg both worked under Mr. Harri man at one time. Mr. Obye will be accompanied by his wife and j two children. John and Mary, 1 and after the banquet the family will continue northward to spend Thanksgiving with rela tives at Yamhill. Relatives in other northern cities also will be visited. Three-Car Mishap A machine operated by Dr. Charles Swee ney of Route 2 struck one driven by J. L. Henry of 708 South Oak street and the Henry car in turn hit a parked vehicle owned by Rex Mills of Portland on South Riverside avenue near Main street last night, a report on file said today. Nobody was injured and damage was nom inal, the report said. Maxine Ferg of 730 Dakota avenue and W. S. Tucker of 2233 Aloha street drove cars involved in a slight mishap on Main near Front street last night, a report on file said today. Cars oper ated by Gerald Bishop of 717 Peach street and L. R. Schoet ter, no address listed, were in volved in a slight accident on East Main street near Crater Lake avenue last night, accord ing to a report on file today. FIVE MM IN BOEING PLANT The Boeing Aircraft company In Seattle has reached down and gathered In for employment five more local youths who have been attending the free govern ment classes in aviation sheet metal work being conducted by Scott Brill at the senior high school. Leaving here tomorrow and Sunday to report for work at Boeing Monday will be Ross Hobbs. Tony R. Coy. Lynn Preabt. Dean Logan and Wil liam Snyder. Earlier this week three local youths left for Burbank Calif., to accept positions at the Lockheed-Vega Aircraft company plant. They were Clarence C. Campbell, Lavern H. Zemke and Rex J. Coy. They also have been attending the avia tion sheet metal work classes. Although there are no imme diate openings in the class at present, the state employment office announced that applica tions were being received and that youths leaving for Boeing or Lockheed in the near future I would provide openings for j those desiring to enroll. (UP) Mrs. Catherine Goering, who will be 90 next birthday, is pointing with pride to her 1941 tobacco crop. Although she Is the town's oldest inhabitant, Mrs. Goering manages to cultivate an acre of tobacco each year, doing all the work from planting to harvest ing. The term "the smoke lamp is lit" aboard one of Uncle Sam's ships means the sailors are permitted to smoke. In old days, before matches were in vented, an actual oil lamp was lighted to provide the crew with a flame from which to light pipes and cigarettes. ! The rank of petty officer, a position any ambitious young sailor can achieve in the U.
