SECRETARY KNOX FROWNS ON POST SEASON CONTEST Turns Thumbs Down On Proposed Game Between Navy And Army Eleven. By Robert Myers Los Angeles, Nov. 6. (P Rose bowl stock of the Univer sity of Texas took a jump today whether It's a safe buy re mains to be seen, however with the disclosure that the navy is on record as opposing at least one proposed post-season appearance by the Annapolis Middies. Secretary Knox, no less, wrote letter and combined with it a recommendation by the super intendent of the Naval academy which turned thumbs down on a proposed game between the navy and the champion army team in California or an all-star aggregation of service men in training out here. The rejection did not apply to the Rose bowl game, but the reasons given for the official decision might govern a Rose bowl invitation, if and when extended. Harry Myers, American Le gion executive, had been toying with an idea of matching navy against a service team yet to be selected. He asked Secretary Knox if tne academy mignt ne nhtnined. The secretary's reply was a definite "no." The Longhorns of Texas, vot ed the nation's top team in the Associated Press poll last week end, meanwhile must be regard ed more than ever as a leading contender for a Rose bowl bid. V-Art Rooney, co-owner of the Pitts burgh Steelers of the National Professional Football league, said today that Aldo (Buff) Don elli had resigned as coach to return as mentor of the Du- quesne university gridders, a job he quit when he joined the Steelers five weeks ago. Donelli's resignation from the pro job, Rooney said, was pre cipitated by the refusal of Elmer Layden, commissioner of the pro league, to allow Donelli to accompany Duquesne to ths west coast for its game with St. Mary's Sunday. The Steelers play the Phila delphia Eagles in a league game the same day and Layden in formed Rooney that Donelli must resign his pro Job if he accompanied the Dukes instead of the Steelers. "It's too bad and I think - -n-elli is making a mistake," Rooney said, adding that Walt Kiesling, assistant coach, would oirect the Steelers for the re mainder of the s:ison. Donelli wanted to direct both the Steelers and the Collegians when he assumed the pro job five weeks ago, but Layden ruled he must quit one or the other. He chose the pros but before returning from Du quesne, Donelli promised his college charges that he would sit on their bench at all re maining games. L IN CURRENT YEAR Total taxable valuation of public utility property In Jack on county for this year is $8, 418.884.73, according to reports received by the county assessor from the public utility commis sion at Salem. This is a drop of $216,123.23 compared with 1940, when it was $8,635,009.08. The California Oregon Power company, largest public utility in the county, is fixed at $5, 092,094.72 for this year, a de cline of $300,747.28 compared with 1940 when it was 15,392,- 842. The Southern Pacific railroad however, shows an Increase in valuation of $63,708. In 1941 valuation Is placed at $2,411, 079.68. Last year It was $2,347, 373.60. The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company also shows a valuation drop of $14,071.12. Its 1941 valuation is fixed at $384,460.80. Last year it was $598,531.92. The valuations will be extend ed on the tax rolls for assess ments. There was no immediate explanation available as to the increases and decreases In val uation. OF IS EYED IN PLANS John H. Bean, con structing quartermaster. M r. Bell's task today was to go over the plans to see that a complete and harmonious schema has been developed to eliminate the possibility of haphazard plant ing, Capt. Bean related. Mr. Bell arrived by train this morning from Vancouver Bar racks, Wash., and was to con tinue to San Francisco by train this evening. To assist in the remaining work of changing drawings in accordance with orders from Washington, D. C, three drafts men have been added to the architect-engineering staff. Cap tain Bean stated. Only a little architectural-engineering . work remains to be done unless Wash ington should order additional changes, he added. Navy's Advertising Gets Quick Results in Enlistments Here The U. S. navy's advertising campaign, begun in the Mail Tribune last week, has brought immediate and gratifying re sults. Jack M. Carpenter, in, charge or the recruiting station here, said today. "It looks as though wa are going to have an exceptionally large quota for the Medford dis trict this month," Mr. Carpenter said. On tha day announcement1 was mad of the sinking of the U. S. destroyer Reuben James, four men who had read the news applied for enlistment, Mr. Carpenter stated. He viewed this as Indicative of the high morale'of the men who want to serve in the navy. And Meet Salem, Nov. 6 VP) Hoplnf to avert the threatened unem ployment of one third of Ore gon's 60,000 logging and lumber workers. Governor Charles A. Spragu ordered th Oregon economic council to meet her with lumbermen November 11 to draft a protest against gov. ernment order eliminating non defense lumber construction. The government said tha gov ernment order already ha caused many cancellation of lumber purchases. T. Morris Dunne, state indus trial accident commissioner, told the governor that tha order would cause more person to be come unemployed in the state'! lumber industry than would be employed in defense Industrie. Dunne said that during thl year, $4,900,000,000 is being spent throughout the nation in defense construction, while $6, 300,000,000 Is being spent for non-defense construction, such a public and private building.
