Lafky, Salem; Junior Vice Commander Geo. W. Watts, Oregon City; Adjutant Quarter master W. E. McGuffin, Port land; Chief of Staff Waldron Hyatt, Toledo; Chaplain Harry M. Wlndus, Portland; Liaison Officer G. O. Pike, and Legisla tive Officer Walter Ake, Port land; District Commander Pete Frederickson, Grants Pass. The following auxiliary offi cers will also be present: Depart ment President Ethel Keck, Sea aide, and her staff and District President Ida Crandall, Ash land. Department Commander Starr Is no stranger to southern Ore gon, having formerly lived at Rogue River end having served with the old 3rd Oregon in Med ford and the Siskiyous at the beginning of the World war. Later he served as a cttptain in France, and saw much service In the trenches. After returning from France, Commander Starr studied law and Is now a partner In the law firm of Gay St Starr of Portland. Ashland, Grants Pass and Medford are the posts compris ing District 11. PLANNED FRIDAY Eugene Smith, 29, held In the county Jail on charges of failure to stop at the scene of an acci dent, will be taken to Klamath Falls tomorrow for a hearing, If it Is agreeable to District Attor ney Orth Sisemore of Klamath county. Attorney Otto Frohn mayer representing Smith said today. Smith Is being held at, the request of Klamath county, in their investigation of the death of Marie Russell, 17-year-old Klamath Falls high school girl, who was found fatally Injured on the highway October 23. Smith, a married man with two children, was arrested here by state police. He denies the charges, but admits he was In Klamath Falls on the day of the tragedy. Smith's efforts to procure liberty on $5,000 bonds were unsuccessful. HEAR LAST ARGUMENTS IN RAWLES MOORE SUIT Closing arguments were un derway today in circuit court, before a Jury, In the suit of Rawles Moore against Amelia Toft Yarrington, for the collec tion of approximately SI, 200. The case started last Monday and was scheduled to last two days. The plaintiff Is repre sented by Attorney Otto Frohn- mayer, and the defense by At torney (Jus Newbury. Herb Grey, advertising manag er of the Medford Mail Tribune, addressed the Medford Lions club Wednesday evening at their regular weekly dinner beld at Ehrheart's. Mr. Grey cited the great re sponsibility the press holds in the present crisis. He pointed out the urgency of maintained free press and expressed the opinion that It was mutually important to the well-being of democracy-loving citizens and the press to enjoy that freedom. "A safeguard of the rights of citizens was written into the constitution in placing freedom of the press on an equal basis with the right of free speech and the right of freedom of worship," Grey said, continuing, "the press has its definite re sponsibilities to the public, in cluding honest editorials, honest advertising and news presented without bias. The charge that large advertisers dominate the dissemination of news and con trol editorial policies is false. There are too many privately owned newspapers whose pub lishers spring from the grass roots of the country." Grey recalled the Important part that newspapers have played in great moral, civic, state and national victories. He emphasized the growing respon sibility of citizens with respect to the financial burden and the combined effort in the fight for democracy. A recommendation was made by the club that the Medford Mail Tribune be sent a letter of appreciation for Its whole- hearted support of the recent 4-H Club Poultry and Rabbit Show which Lions club mem bers sponsored, and which state 4-H leaders cited as being the first large-scale event of its kind in the state. Phoenix High Names Honor Roll Students Phoenix, Nov. 6. (SpU The Phoenix high school honor roll for the first six weeks of school has been announced hy Super intendent Floyd Barrett as fol lows: Seniors, Lucille Coffman, Twila Ferns, Marita Furry, Pat Furry, and Margie Heckert; Juniors, Dale Cobleigh; sopho mores, Bil Barnum, Lola Cob leigh, Dale Crouse, and Gloria Houston: freshman, Josephine Kantor. Reese Creek Reese Creek, Nov. 8. (Spl.) Mrs. Elmer Robertson is home ; from the Community hospital where she was taken Oct. 26 suffering from an injury re ceived in a fall on a slippery board near her house. She struck the back of her head and was unconscious for sometime. Friends are hoping for her com plete early recovery. Tht Hallowe'en party beld as the school house Friday evening. October 91, was a complete success. A large crowd was present and a splendid program waa put on by the school. Mrs. Charles Bouaeum of Medford gave three clever readings.
