Reporting on the work of the local Community Chert agen cies, C. E. Gate, campaign chairman, indicated today that the work of the atx agenciea reached out with its services into the homes of thousands of citiiens. "Many people," he said, "do not realise that the Community Chest is of service to them because their relation to the chest is indirect and comes through one of the six agencies. It is the funds raised by the Community Chest that makes possible the continuation of the work of the Salvation Army, the Boy Scouts of Amer 'ica, the Jackson County Health association, the American Red Cross, the Girl Scouts, and the Girls Community club." Each Has Story Each agency has a story of real progress to tell. He quoted the following as a portion of the report from the Boy Scouts of America in the Medtora Dis trict only. The information com- in from S. M. Bullis, local district scout chairman. "The Medford district of the Crater Lake Area Boy Scout Council is by far the largest district in our council which contains three counties. In Med ford we maintain an office with a full time Scout executive and an office secretary. We service Josephine, Jackson and Siskiyou I counties in Scouting matters, I but Medford is the largest part of our work and the center of activities. "We have a registered mem bership of boys and men in ex cess of 450 in this one district In the course of a year service will be rendered in this district to about 675 men and boys. Twenty-one units are now active and three more are in the pro cess of organization. Scouting exists for the purpose of train ing boys for citizenship and to influence in the proper direction their character development. Troops and Packs belong to in dividual Institutions and the leadership is entirely volunteer "We maintain a camp at Lake of the Woods which was attend ed this past summer by. over 750 different campers from this area. In addition to five weeks of use by the Boy Scouts, the camp was also used for one week by the Salvation Army, two weeks by the Girl Scouts. and one week by the Ashland Campfire Girls. "At the present time Scout units are busy planning for a region wide loyalty demonstra tion' which Is to take place in early November. Pear Market Yesterday LEWIS HEDGPETH L Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hedgpeth of Central Point said today they had received news of the grad uation of their son, Sec. Lieut. Lewis Hedgpeth, from U. S. Army Engineer's school at Fort Belvoir, Va., Sept. 27. He also received on that day orders to report for a year's service at rort McClellan, Ala. Lieut. Hedgpeth was one of two men selected from the Pa cific coast for training at the engineer school and was a mem ber of the first engineer officer candidate class to graduate from Fort Belvoir. He enlisted in the 29th army engineer corps at Portland, November 1940 and earned rapid advancement as corporal and sergeant, beginning his training at Fort Belvoir in July. 1941. Lieut.
