Sport Graphs o Billy Hulen Says: Tornado Line Is Powerful In Two Games Thus Far Typical While it Is ilmple matter to record statistically the suc cess, or lack of it, of your ball toting backfleld performers, it is next to impossible to produce actual figures along the same lines for those Individual fel lows up there in the forward wall. It's almost as easy to keep tab on backfield offensive act ivity as it is to establish a base ball player's batting average. The backs carry the ball a cer tain number of times, they make so many yards all told, and they made this or that amount of yards per carry. But with the linemen it Is a different story. No system has yet been evolved to keep track of the blocks and tackles miss ed or made by each individual end, tackle, guard and center; to do so would take a corps of observers, each eyeing a single position from opening kickoff to final gun. Even then, plays would be missed in the mass entanglements and accur ate individual records would be Impossible. It follows, then, that to guage the strength of a line, the line must be taken as a whole. It must be balanced against the offensive statistical figures of the opposition, and its own of fensive value must be deter mined by the figures of its own backfleld. In two games thus far this uiion. the Black Tornado . forward vail has comported would cautiously call a "sat isfactory" manner. Not being a master of understatement like Mr, Bowerman, we would simply say that, so far, the Tigers have displayed one helluva front string. and Corvallis, in 44 scrimmage shots at Medford's line, gained total of 92 yards, or an aver age of 2.09 yards per play. On the other hand the Tornado backs, in 85 rushing maneuvers aimed at openings created bv the red and black line, gained 865 total yards, or an average of 8.83 yards per play. On the basis of those figures, It would seem the Medford for wards have been Just about three times as effective, both defensively and offensively, as have the Weed and Corvallis linemen. Which even to a non statistical minded fan appears correct. We do not mean to Intimate that all Medford's success on scrimmage plays has been due entirely to the operation of the line. The backs have perform ed well, even brilliantly at times, and to tell the truth we have never seen such a wealth of good ball-carriers on one high school squad. Still, the fact remains that that big Tornado line has been cracking open some lusty holes and doing some extraordinarily fine down field blocking (against Corval lis), all of which hasn't hinder ed the leather luggers. So far as the backfield Is concerned, no less than seven of the boys have an average of over 3 yards per carry. This explains what we mean by a "wealth of good ball carriers." Steve Dlppel, the sophomore understudy for Right Halfback Ike Orr, has the best average, with 114 total yards In 8 tries for a 14.2 yards average per carry. Cato Wray is next witn an average of 10.5 yards per carry on 136 total yards gained in 13 times packed. The others scale down in the following order: Carried Yards Avg. Glenn .ll 81 7.4 I. Medford has completed 17 out of 42 aerials for 207 yards, an average of 12.2 yards per com pletion and a percentage of 40.5 in number of passes completed, while Weed and Corvallis have completed nine passes out of 24 attempted for 97 yards, an average of 10.8 yards per com pletion and a percentage of 37.5 In number of passes com pleted. The Rainlers went into their double-header with fourth-place Hollywood at Seattle last night trailing two games to three but blasted the Stars 2 to 0 in both contests to take the seven game preliminary series and ad vance to the finals. Sacramento, league runner-up, had already reached the final round by thumping San Diego four games straight. The playoff for the President's cup and $5,000 first prize money opens In Seattle Friday night, and will continue through Sun day. The two teams will finish the series at Sacramento next week. Fallon Homers A pair of brilliant pitching performances brought Seattle victory In both games of last night's doubleheader, when a single defeat would have knock ed the Rainlers out of the play offs. Ed Cole limited Hollywood to three scattered hits in the opener, while Charley Fallon's home run and Al Niemiec's score on a star error brought in the winning runs In the second Inning. In the seven-Inning nightcap, Dick "Kewpie" Barrett yielded only four hits in winning, Dick Gyselman, - Rainier third base man, drove In both runs with singles in the second and fourtn innings.
