PARE SEVEN Three Stars in Action Packed "Manpower", Opening at Craterian Today I Lamour In South Sea Role Angels With Broken Wings Billy The Kid 5: SEPARATED BY RECORD TAX Bill! mm E A itar combination that spells dramatic action is brought to gether in ''Manpower," opening a three-day run today at the Craterian theatre. Bringing to gether Edward G. Robinson, Marlene Dietrich and George Raft results in a punch-packed motion picture that should please most theatre-goers. Robinson and Raft play the roles of a couple of robust line men whose dangerous job it is to repair broken high tension wires. They are great pals, sharing each other's happiness and trouble, until an alluring, hard, calculating blonde, Diet rich, comes along. Robinson falls hard, and eventually she marries him to spite Raft. Then she falls in love with Raft. The resulting complications Robin son idolizing Dietrich; Raft, at first contemptuous of her, later fascinated by her confession of love for him; Dietrich, nearly driven to madness with her pre tended love for Robinson, hav ing to listen to him continually praise the man she really loves finally explode in a high-powered climax. Alan Hale and Frank McHugh supply much comedy to the pic ture as two practical jokers who don't lose their sense of humor in the face of danger. Others in the cast include Walter Cat lett. Eve Arden, Barton Mac Lane, Barbara Pepper and Ward Bond. Dr. Kildare And Dr. Gillespie In Newest Picture Dr. Kildare and his precep tor, the crusty Dr. Gillespie, go through one of their most dram atic adventures in "Dr. Kil dare'a Wedding Day," newest of the Dr. Kildare series, which plays today and Monday only at the Rialto theatre, with Lew Ayres, Lionel Barrymore, Lar aine Day and, as special guest star, Nils Asther. The story deals with a fam ous syphony conductor who dis covers himself gradually grow ing deaf, and the work of the Co-starring lovely Dorothy Lamour and virile Jon Hall In what is said to be among the season's most spectacular films, the all-Technicolor romance. "Aloma of the South Seas" will come to the Craterian theatre for a four-day showing starting Wednesday. Exciting melo drama is brought to a climax when a giant volcano erupts and a native rebellion breaks out. Philip Reed, Lynne Overman, Katharine deMille and a saucy little newcover. Dona Drake, are among the many featured play ers in supporting roles. two doctors in discovering the cause of his malady and restor ing his musical perception. In the course of this, the early romance of the older doctor is disclosed; how he loved a musician who composed a sym phony before she died in her youth. In the dramatic climax this symphony is played by a great orchestra, with Asther conduct ing. The music used is from the symphony composed by Barrymore, 'Tableau Russe," which has been played by many American symphony orchestras. Barrymore also plays parts of his own music on the piano In Today - for 3 Days! the picture. The counter plot deals with Ayres' losing his sweetheart, and Barrymore's restoring his men tal balance after the tragedy. Red Skelton, Alma Kruger and Samuel S. Hinds have sup porting roles. . DENY JAIL BIRDS Salem, Sept. 20. (P) It was "no pie, and no more smoking either," for the 17 Inmates of the Marion county jail today because someone, said Sheriff A. C. Burk, set fire to the ceil ing of the jail bathroom Friday afternoon. The blaze apparently had smouldered, directly under the county recorder's office, for 15 minutes before clerks there smelled smoke and sounded an larm, investigating firemen re ported. Damage was negligible. "I guess we've been treating these boys too well," Burk com mented. "We haven't yet found out who did it." WW t-&l- -mm Jpp Boasting an excellent cast, an amusing plot and music and fun galore, "Angels with Broken Wings" comes to the Rialto theatre for Tuesday and Wed nesday with Binnie Barnes, Billy Gilbert, Gilbert Roland. Leo ("Dead End'' Kid) Gorcey and Jane Frazee in the important starring roles. The story in volves the romance of a gay widow with twee grow n-up chil dren and an unhappy married business man who decides to get rid of his nagging wife and marry the young widow. The wife objects and when the kids step in to "do their part" in breaking up their future papa's home-life the fun really gets underway, and, according to ad vance reports, will be a sure-see comedy for young and old alike. Robert Taylor has the finest role of hi career as the notori ous mid-west bandit, "Billy the Kid," which opens a three-day run today at the Roxy theatre. Filmed in breath-taking Techni color, the film tells the story of the outlaw and his quest for re venge for wrong done him to I his youth. Others in the cast are Brian Donlevy, Mary How ard, Ian Hunter and Gene Lock-hart. E Salem, Sept. 20. Attorney General L H. Van Winkle ruled today. School districts of Lane coun ty through District Attorney William W. Bartle had asked Van Winkle If a provision of the 1541 law limiting tax levies for the first half of 1942 to a three per cent Increase, In effect, to them. He affixed his signature at 8:15 a. m. (PST). Designed to help defray the multiplying costs of the national defense and the lease-lend pro gram, the legislation is expected to lift federal revenues above the $13,000,000,000 mark next year. Even that total, however, would be only slightly more than half of the estimated ex penditures for the current fiscal year and would fail to carry out Secretary Morgenthau's rec ommendation that government spending be financed two-thirds from taxes and one-third from borrowing.
