Hapner, beverage salesman, who entered a plea of guilty to ob taining money under false pre tenses, by Circuit Judge Herbert K. Hanna, after pleas for len iency had been made by the complaining witness, his em ployer, the pastor of his church, and the wife of the proprietor Of one of the groceries he bilked. Hapner, 32, weeping and re pentant, told the court he would make restitution amounting to approximately $300 and "never again punch a punchboard." The court complimented Hap ner upon having loyal friends who came to his assistance, "and testified to your previous good character and honesty." A. Foss of Eugene, district manager of the Coca-Cola company; Charles Bateman, who signed the com plaint, Mrs. William Holloway and the Rev. R. W. Coleman, pastor of the First Christian church, all made pleas. The court instructed Hapner to report once a month to the district attorney, and call upon the court occasionally. The hear ing was concluded with the court commenting: "Your re demption is now entirely up to yourself, and I trust you make good." Reed, caretaker, and Miss Ruth Lance, clerk. Firat Northwest Draftees Go Home Fort Worden, Wash., Sept. 19. () Donald W. Home, Portland, supply sergeant, was out of the army today. He was one of eight men dis charged yesterday under the new federal act granting defer ment to men over 28 years of age. The men, believed to be the first in the Pacific north west to be released under the act, were placed in the organ ized reserves, subject to call for 10 years or until age 45. PASSES, AGED 73 Thomas Benjamin Farmer, 73, a resident of Rogue River, Ore gon, passed away at a local hos pital Thursday afternoon, after a short illness. Mr. Farmer was born at Liv erpool, England, Oct. 12, 1867. He came to the United States in 188S, and settled at Baltimore, Md. He was united in marriage there to Miss Jessie Armstrong in 1900. They lived In Maryland until 1919, when they came to Southern Oregon. He was an electrician by trade. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Hatch, of Rogue River, Ore., also one grandchild, David Hatch.
