EDNA GLADNEY IS INSPIRATION FOR BRILLIANT DRAMA Marsha Hunt Picture Is Technicolor. In Cast Filmed In Inspired by the life of Edna Gladney, a woman who has placed more than 2,000 babies in happy homes, "Blossoms in the Dust," opening today at the Craterian theatre, co-stars Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon for the first time. ' Besides, departing from the usual Ho'llywood formula for drama, the film, photographed in Technicolor, shies away from the ordinary brilliant tones for merly used and for the first time uses color as a means of furthering the plot rather than catching the eye. Only delicate, pastel tonet are used, but they serve to accentuate the brilliant titian coloring of Miss Garson. Miss Garson and Pidgeon have an opportunity as Edna and Sam Gladney to depict one of the screen's tcnderest ro mances, and their work in es tablishing a home for unwant ed youngsters brings the prob lems and struggles of the pio neer workers in the field of child welfare to the screen for the first time. Today Mrs. Glad ney is superintendent of the V-Texas Children's Home and Aid Society at Fort Worth. Featured in the supporting cast are Marsha Hunt, Felix Bressart, Fay Holden, and more than 800 children, ranging from a 17-day-old infant to young sters of seven and eight. The story traces the life of a beautiful and vibrant girl from the time of her meeting with an impetuous Texan to their marriage. Mellowed by a life which sees her through the loss of both her husband and child, she devotes the remaining years to finding homes and a proper environment for thousands of homeless waifs. Tax Flddies lOe New Demonstration Agent Leads Unit Rally Meetings With a series of rally meetings already under way, home extension units of Jackson county are opening a full year's pro. gram under leadership of Miss Marian Farrell, county home demonstration agent, who assumed her new duties the first of the month. Miss Farrell. coming here from Portland late in July, grad uated from Oregon stale college in 1939, and for two years taught home economics in the Lebanon high school. She suc ceeds Mrs. Jacqueline B. Jones, who resigned last month after Miss Marian Farrell serving one year as home dem onstration agent. Mrs. Jones is accompanying her husband on a business trip to Arizona at the present, after which they will continue to make their home In Medford. A number of new projects are being offered by the Oregon State college extension service this year, including health emergencies In the home, citiz enship, outlook on life after forty, and women in business and law. Other projects round ing out the year's work program are line, design and color In clothing; meals from the pantry shelf; Rnd cooking of meat or frozen foods.
