Exhibit Now on display In the front show window of the Jackson' County Chamber of Commerce are some of the things created at the Summer Camp for Children sponsored by the George A. Hunt Theaters, Inc., and conducted by the Sal i vation Army. It is the same exhibit that graced the libby of the Craterian theater for some time. In Alaska L. L. Simpson, for mer construction foreman of the Rogue River national forest, is now facilities foreman on the construction of an air base bout three miles from Kodiak. Alaska, it was disclosed in a letter forest headquarters re ceived from him today. There are between 3,000 and 4.000 -( persons in his construction camp, Mr. Simson wrote. Awarded Trophy Philip Low ry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert B. Lowry, Bear Creek orchards, returned last night from Berke ley, Cal., where he attended the national Theta Chi convention, which is held every two years. While there he was awarded the Reginald Colley trophv. having been selected as the outstanding Theta Chi in the Uni'td States for 1939-40. The award is made on a basis of scholarship, lead ership, service to the university and to the fraternity. Lowry js a second year law student at the University of Oregon. E Jumping off a motorcycle directly into the path of an oncoming automobile, Ben D. Marsden, 21, of Gold Hill suf fered a broken right leg and bruises about 5:30 p. m. Monday In front of the 99 Motel on North Riverside avenue. He was taken to Sacred Heart hospital In the Peil ambulance, but was released this morning to return to his home. Police said the youth was rid ing on a motorcycle operated by Nolan C. A machine operated by Wer ner Wagner of Central Point, traveling north on North River side avenue, passed the Motel Just as Marsden Jumped off the motorcycle and struck the young man with its right front fender and headlight, police reported The motorcycle was not hit and Swindler was uninjured, police aaid. John Litster of Sardine Creek transacted business and called upon friends here yesterday. Sentenced Carl Reeves, 40, a transient charged with drunk enness, was sentenced to serve five days in Jail in city court this morning. Improving George R. Carter, clerk of Jackson county, is con valescing satisfactorily from the operation he underwent recently in St. Vincent's hospital, Port land, his office said today. Buys Merchandise Josephine Rostel, buyer for Mann's depart ment store, returned to Medford Sunday midnight by United Mainliner after a business trip to Portland where she pur chased coats, suits and dresses for the fall showing. She went to Portland Sunday morning by Mainliner. Due Tuesday Mrs. Van Gil bert, Holly apartments, and Mrs Minnie Bellinger, 125 North Holly street, are expected to return home next Tuesday after a fortnight's sojourn in the San Francisco bay area. They were to be guests of Mrs. Gilbert: son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Bonney. in San Rafael, and of her brother. Omer Milligan, in Oakland. Their itinerary also included visits with relatives of Mrs. Bel linger. Plan Passengers Arriving from Portland by United Main liner this forenoon were E. S Turner and Miss L. Woodruff. Mrs. J. Keizer left for Los Angeles on the same plane. Diamond Flynn and William Briggs departed for Portland early this morning. J. Barr arrived from Portland last mid night. Leaving last night for Portland were Miss B. Hoff and Mrs. L. M. Gage. G. R. Win niger arrived from Portland late last evening. Leaving on the early evening plane were G. E. Murphy, to Seattle, and F. M. Hardy, to Vakima, Wash. Mrs. S. Riegel left for Portland late yesterday afternoon. Arriv ing on the noon plane from San Francisco yesterday were H. F. Ford and G. A. Ford. Mrs. G. Collins departed for Portland on the same plane. ADDS TO 7-DEATH Salem (Spl.) At 12:30 p. m on August 9 a passenger In a motor vehicle was killed In an accident in Marion county. At 2:06 p. m., another Oregonian died in a motor vehicle accident in Lake county. Then at 4:40 o'clock a traffic accident took one life in Polk county and at 5:15 there was another accidtnt victim in the city of Grants Pass. At 9:15 o'clock, the fifth traffic victim was recorded in Malheur county and at 11:30 p. m., the Grim Reaper cla'med two more traffic victims in Jackson county to complete his day. Score: For the one day of August 9 seven persons killed That diy saw the most traffic fatalities for any one day in Oregon since February 4. 1940 ' j according to the state traffic i safety d'vlsion. On January 11 of this year, six persons died in1 traffic accidents and there are several days when five persons were killed. The August 9 toll constituted 18 per rent of all the traffic deaths recorded In Oregon for the entire month of August, he jafety division's figures rlis- closed. Of the seven deaths, only one occurred in urban areas, all .he rest resulting from accidents on highways in rural districts. The urban accident involved a small child on a bicycle who rode across the path of an ".uproach ing car. Non-collision accidents took three lives and the others were killed in collisions involv ing two vehicles. Holly. uMbLUllAlt Senior Employment Officer At State Employment Of fice Receives Appointment Salem, Sept. 9. (P The Oregon re-employment plan, un der which all Oregon men re leased from the army will be given jobs, it ready to go into full operation, state selective service headquarters and the Oregon employment service an nounced today. The first selectees and nation al guardsmen to be discharged will begin to return to ihetr vre con homes late this month. Re-employment commit tee men who will act as liaison agents between the returning soldiers, local selective service board and employers, were ap pointed today. They include: John J. Patton, Medford, for Jackson county. (Mr. Patton is senior employ ment officer at the state em ployment service office, Med ford. 45 North Fir street) Before each soldier is released, all data concerning him will be sent to selective service head quarters. This information will be relayed to the re-employment committeemen, and steps will be taken to find jobs for the sol diers. The soldier's former employer will be approached first, and if this employer has no Job avail able, then other jobs will be sought. Soldiers who had no training in any Jobs before they went into service will be sent to training schools. L L Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Wright of 28 Groveland avenue became alarmed when their two dogs, Corkey, a Scottie, and Bonnie a wire-haired terrier, did not show up as usual this morning for breakfast. Investigation revealed the two' pets in the living room, entirely oblivious of what was going on in the kitchen. They were on point, like bird dogs. And they were pointing a bird, too. It was an owl, perched and peace fully sleeping on a windowsill inside the room, the window being closed. The Wrights feared that If they disturbed the owl their house would be wrecked. So they called the Southern Oregon Humane society for help. The bird, which had entered the house through the chimney, was removed without damage. Then Corkey and Bonnie remembered breakfast.
